93 horses now shelter from wildfires at OC fairgrounds – Orange County Register

On Wednesday morning, 93 horses were stocked at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

The animals were being taken to the fairgrounds riding arena because of the rapidly spreading airport fire that started Monday in Trabuco Canyon and has now reached Riverside County.

Horses and other large animals can be taken to the shelter for as long as needed during the emergency, officials said. The fairgrounds often serve as a shelter for animals in emergencies.

Terry Moore, spokesman for the OC Fair & Event Center, said most of the horses come from the Santiago and Trabuco Canyon areas.

Around noon on Tuesday, there were 23 horses at the riding center. Workers have built temporary stables to accommodate the influx of animals, and there is still space available.

“We will continue to be a resource for the community as these emergencies continue and will do everything we can to ensure animals have a safe place to stay for as long as necessary,” OC Fair CEO Michele Richards said in a statement. “The OC Fair & Event Center is here to serve, and we have the resources to help.”
