Airport fire spreads, burns in Orange, Riverside County – NBC Los Angeles

The airport fire, reported Monday afternoon in Trabuco Canyon, has spread and burned more than 55,000 acres in Orange and Riverside counties, but falling temperatures could slow the fire, officials said Wednesday.

The fire at the airport, which was only 0% under control on Wednesday afternoon, threatened more than 10,000 buildings in both provinces. Seven people were injured, including five firefighters.

“The fire moved across Ortega Highway last night. There was damage and destruction to some structures along Ortega Highway. We have damage assessment crews out today to see what the damage is,” said Captain Paul Holaday of the Orange County Fire Authority.

While firefighters battle the fire from the air and ground, they could get some relief on Wednesday if the weather improves.

“The fire has slowed down for us, so we can make more progress on the flanks of the fire,” Holaday said, adding that temperatures were about 15 degrees cooler on Wednesday and humidity was higher.

But because the wind phenomenon, the Elsinore effect, could cause erratic wind shifts, authorities continued to urge residents to follow evacuation orders and warnings.

Firefighters and emergency responders gained more access to firefighting resources when Gov. Gavin Newsom secured a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Cal Fire officials said.
