Taylor Swift drew over 337,000 visitors to vote.gov with Kamala Harris’ support

Message from Taylor Swift statement of support for Vice President Kamala Harris before the White House on Tuesday drew at least 337,826 users to the vote.gov website, a sign of the potential consequences of her decision to speak out before the November election.

Vote.gov is run by a federal agency known as the General Services Administration, in conjunction with the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. The site provides information on how to register to vote and cast a ballot, and directs users to state websites where they can register.

In an Instagram post after the presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump, Swift wrote that she would vote for Harris and Gov. Tim Walz, her Democratic running mate. She urged her fans to do their own research and make their voices heard in November.

“I did my research and I made my choice. Your research is entirely yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters, remember that you have to be registered to vote! I also find it much easier to vote early,” she wrote, sharing a modified link to vote.gov in an accompanying Instagram story.

A GSA spokesperson said 337,826 users had visited vote.gov through Swift’s link as of 2 p.m. Eastern Time Wednesday. The spokesperson noted that new voters will ultimately have to register to vote through their own state-specific website.

Harris’ campaign quickly embraced the support of one of the world’s most influential pop stars. The campaign quickly began selling Harris-Walz friendship bracelets, the fashion accessory worn by millions of Swift fans during her Eras Tour around the world. The bracelets sold out by Wednesday.

Swift has shown in the past that she can get her supporters registered to vote. In 2023, she urged fans to register at vote.org, and more than 35,000 people answered the call.

The Pennsylvania native first ventured into politics in 2018, when she endorsed Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen for the Tennessee Senate. “In the past, I have been reluctant to express my political views publicly, but due to various events in my life and in the world over the past two years, I now feel very differently about that,” Swift wrote at the time. Bredesen ultimately lost to Republican Marsha Blackburn.

In her statement of support for Harris, Swift wrote that the vice president “fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to defend them” and called her “a steadfast, talented leader.”

She signed her post, “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to comments made by Sen. J.D. Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate. In a 2021 interviewAccording to Vance, the country is run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy themselves.”

Vance expressed doubts about the impact of Swift’s endorsement on Fox News on Wednesday.

“We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music or are fans of her or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and issues of most Americans,” Vance said.
