Taylor Swift Breaks Multiple Records With MTV VMAs Win

Taylor Swift won the most coveted award of the night at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, breaking multiple records in the process. The superstar won video of the year for her song “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone.

Swift won seven VMAs this year, bringing her total to 30, tying her with Beyoncé for the list of most VMAs of all time.

After Swift accepted the trophy from VMAs host Megan Thee Stallion, she took the stage to express her appreciation to her fans and everyone who helped bring the music video to life, including Post Malone, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles (who had a cameo in the music video), cinematographer/DP Rodrigo Prieto, and production designer Ethan Tobman.

“Directing this video, putting it together, writing it was the most amazing experience. And that’s because of all the people I got to make it with,” she said in her acceptance speech. “The thing is, this video looks really sad when you watch it, but it was actually the most fun video to make.”

Swift also praised a special person in her life who was always present on set during the music video filming and encouraged her between takes.

“One thing I’ll always remember is whenever I would finish a take and I would say ‘cut,’ and we’d be done with that take, I would always hear someone cheering from the other side of the studio where we were recording it. And that person was my boyfriend Travis (Kelce),” the singer added, prompting screams from the audience. “Everything that man touches turns to happiness and joy and magic, so I want to thank him for bringing that to our shoot.”

Swift concluded: “I always try to find a way to thank the fans for making my life what it is, for making the Eras Tour what it is, for making The Tormented Poets Department what it has become. That is your thanks for doing that and for voting for this award. … I really appreciate it.”

Swift broke several records with her win in the video of the year category, including extending her record for the most awarded artist in the category, having previously won for “Bad Blood”, “You Need to Calm Down”, “All Too Well: The Short Film” and “Anti-hero”.

She also became the first artist to win the VMA for Video of the Year three years in a row, taking it home last year for “Anti-hero” and in 2022 for “All Too Well: The Short Film.”

The “Cruel Summer” artist is also known for directing several of her music videos over the years. As a result, her Video of the Year win for “Fortnight” extends her record as the artist with the most wins in the category for videos she directed or co-directed. Her previous videos for “You Need to Calm Down,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” and “Anti-hero” were all directed/co-directed by Swift.

Swift defeated Ariana Grande with “we can’t be friends (wait for your love),” Billie Eilish with “LUNCH,” Doja Cat with “Paint The Town Red,” Eminem with “Houdini” and SZA with “Snooze.”

Earlier in the evening, while accepting her award for Best Collaboration with her “Fortnight” co-star Post Malone, the singer also took a moment to reflect on the tragedy of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the 23rd anniversary: “Everything that happens tonight falls under that.”

It was a triumphant year overall for Swift, who not only won the Grammy for album of the year for Midnights earlier this year, but she also released her eleventh studio album The Tormented Poets Departmentwhich topped the Billboard 200 chart for 15 weeks. She has also been busy performing for fans around the world on her Eras tour, which concludes in North America later this year.
