Chappell Roan Swears and Yells ‘Shut Up’ on VMAs Red Carpet

Chappell Roan yelled at someone to “shut the f*ck up” on the Video Music Awards red carpet — after they yelled the same thing.

A clip of the incident went viral on X during Wednesday’s event, showing Roan screaming at the photography department as her stylist was fixing her dress.

She later said the VMAs red carpet was a “horrible” experience.

This comes after Roan, who rose to fame earlier this year, publicly stated her boundaries in recent months, citing, among other things, the “creepy” behavior of fans.

In the viral clip, Roan says, “Shut the fuck up! Not me, bitch.”

While some initially criticized Roan for this, others supported her after a longer clip surfaced online, in which someone off-screen can be heard saying, “Shut the fuck up!” to which Roan yells back.

Some media outlets, such as The Hollywood Reporter, reported that a photographer had shouted the phrase, but it is unclear whether the words were directed at Roan.

Later during the event, Roan told Entertainment Tonight that the red carpet is “terrible… for someone who gets very anxious when people are yelling.”

“This is quite overwhelming and quite scary,” she said. “I yelled back. You can’t yell at me like that.”

Wednesday’s event marked Roan’s first time at the VMAs, where she won the Best New Artist award. She performed her song “Good Luck Babe,” which made the singer an instant pop sensation earlier this year.

Roan’s weekly streams increased from less than 3 million to 68.36 million in the first half of the year, Billboard reported in June.

Roan has been openly critical of fans who overstep boundaries in recent months.

On August 19, Roan shared two TikTok videos in which he called out fans for their “creepy” behavior, including publicly harassing her for photos, following her, and stalking her family.

“I don’t want what you think you’re entitled to when you see a celebrity,” Roan said in the second video. “I don’t give a fuck if you think it’s selfish of me to say no to a picture or your time or a hug. That’s not normal. That’s weird.”

A week later, Roan also shared a statement on Instagram with a similar message.

In an interview for the cover of Rolling Stone published Tuesday, Roan said that many singers, including Billie Eilish, Elton John, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Charli XCX, had privately supported her after she spoke out.
