The Davis Fire south of Reno was still burning in its sixth day Thursday. The blaze, first reported Saturday afternoon, had burned an estimated 5,646 acres and was 37 percent contained, according to information released by authorities Wednesday night. Much of the containment line was on the southeast side of the fire, near Little Washoe Lake.

The weather forecast for the area on Thursday calls for calm winds and cooler temperatures, with a high of 24 degrees Celsius, a significant improvement on the windy conditions of Wednesday.

The Washoe County School District announced Wednesday night that it will keep 10 schools in south Reno and Incline Village closed Thursday due to the Davis fire.

The district said it will continue to work with public safety officials to determine what is safe for students and staff.

Schools closed on Thursday, September 12 include:

  • Galena High School
  • Marce Herz Secondary School
  • Picollo school
  • Huffaker Elementary School
  • Hunsberger Primary School
  • Lenz Primary School
  • Pleasant Valley Elementary
  • Incline high school
  • Incline High School
  • Incline Primary School

All other schools are open.

Fewer than 2,400 customers without power from Davis Fire

NV Energy confirmed that nearly 2,400 customers were still without electricity as of Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The power outage occurred in five neighborhoods west of Thomas Creek Road on the Mount Rose Highway. These areas have also been designated as evacuation zones.

“The reason the power is out in those areas is because we are committed to the safety of the first responders working in that area,” said Jesse Murray, vice president of electric utility and natural disaster protection at NV Energy.

“(We) also wanted to make sure we didn’t contribute to any potential secondary fires that could make the situation worse.”

NV Energy confirmed that it has repaired 19 power lines that were damaged yesterday. However, the utility expects that equipment is damaged in two areas where the fire is most active and is currently inaccessible to its crews.

Davis Fire Press Conference: Fire Lines Hold; Worst-Case Prediction Fails

While firefighters said the threat from the Davis fire is not over, Tuesday’s dire predictions have not yet come to pass.

“We still have a little while before we can sit down and rest,” said Stewart Turner, a fire behavior analyst.

Turner was one of several officials who spoke at a news conference with Gov. Joe Lombardo on Wednesday at the South Valleys Library.

Turner said Tuesday that fire models showed the fire could spread 3 to 7 miles with winds reaching 70 mph. The greatest threat of winds spreading the fire was expected to peak at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Fire officials said the fire lines held Wednesday, at 37% containment. On Tuesday, the fire was 31% contained.

Jason Clawson, head of Southwest Operations, said he hopes to have further improved containment by the end of the day.

“I feel really good that I’m prepared,” Clawson said.

Starting Thursday morning, firefighters will be able to use flight support to help extinguish the fire as the wind dies down, Clawson said.

“Tonight we still expect the winds to die down overnight,” Turner said. “The fire will behave very differently over the next 24 hours.”

“We are still in danger tonight.”

Turner said it would be a “big victory” if the fire damage doesn’t become too extensive.

Turner was convinced that the improved prospects were due to the efforts of the fire brigade.
