Britney Spears is a fan of Sabrina Carpenter’s short — and sweet! — tribute to her at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Carpenter, 25, performed a medley of her current hits at the VMAs on Wednesday, September 11 — including “Please Please Please,” “Espresso” and “Taste” — adding the iconic spoken interlude from Spears’ classic “Oops!…I Did It Again” in the background.

The pop star’s stage, which also featured astronauts and aliens, also paid tribute to Spears, whose music video for “Oops!” featured a trip to Mars.

Though Spears, 42, said in a Sept. 12 Instagram video that she didn’t watch the VMAs, she did watch Carpenter’s performance on YouTube. And while she questioned the singer’s onstage kiss with an alien, she felt honored.

“Why is she kissing an alien on stage? I adore her. I love her to bits. I didn’t get it. Why didn’t she kiss a girl?” Spears said, likely referring to her famous 2003 VMAs kiss with Madonna. “That was weird. But I thought the whole thing was a little weird, too.”

The “Toxic” singer said that after watching she “took a really long bath” and took up coloring, one of her favorite hobbies at the moment.

“This Sabrina girl, she said my name on the red carpet, and I thought that was cool because I forget sometimes that I’m famous,” Spears said. “Because I’m a mom, I’m kind of old, blah blah blah. But that was cool. … She said something and I was like, ‘Thank you, that’s cool.’ She made me cool!”

Carpenter, whose viral hit “Espresso” won best song of the year, also paid tribute to Madonna at the VMAs, wearing the same glittering white dress the Queen of Pop wore to the Oscars in 1991.

Other artists also paid tribute to Spears throughout the evening, including host Megan Thee Stallion, who recreated Spears’ famous “I’m a Slave 4 U” outfit from the 2001 VMAs, complete with giant python.

“Stop the music, stop the music!” Megan screamed as the snake curled around her shoulders. “I’m just playing! Come get this snake! I don’t know this snake, this snake doesn’t know me. Oh my God. I was trying to hold it for Britney.”

Actress Halsey also revealed that her favorite VMAs moment was the kiss between Spears and Madonna. Tate McRae also wore a lace minidress that resembled Spears’ red carpet look at the 2001 VMAs.
