Bills DE Von Miller climbs NFL record book with sack against Dolphins

In a game that featured strong game plans on both the offensive and defensive ends, a Buffalo Bills pass rusher delivered a personal feat.

Von Miller recorded a sack in the second quarter of Buffalo’s dominant Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins, his second quarterback takedown of the young season after nearly two calendar years without a sack. It was unusual, but not necessarily unexpected, for the NFL’s active all-time sack leader, considering he tore his ACL midway through the 2022 campaign; he didn’t return until Week 5 of the following season and has looked a shadow of his former self, totaling three tackles and zero sacks in the 2023 campaign.

There has been much talk around the organization about Miller’s return to form during the off-season, with people at various levels praising his play at the end of the 2023 campaign and throughout the summer. He has carried that summer prowess into the new season, with two sacks in two games.

The takedowns weren’t necessarily picturesque, but they still count for something in the stats. Miller’s sack on Thursday moved him up slightly in the NFL record book, as he now ties with longtime Indianapolis Colts defensive back Dwight Freeney for 18th on the NFL list with 125.5 sacks.

Miller’s status as a future Hall of Famer has long been unanimous, and the fact that he is now tied with a Pro Football Hall of Famer in career sacks adds some credence to that notion. Given his current pace, the pass rusher could realistically surpass Derrick Thomas (126.5), Rickey Jackson (128), Leslie O’Neal (132.5), Lawrence Taylor (132.5) and John Abraham (133.5) in career sacks this season, which would put him in the 13th position on the all-time sack list.

As Buffalo faithful know, the NFL’s all-time sack leader is Bills defensive end Bruce Smith, who has 200 sacks over the course of a nearly 20-year career. It’s hard to imagine Miller, now 35, ever coming close to matching that total, but his newfound form has given Buffalo’s pass rush a welcome boost; that he’s earned individual accolades along the way is merely a bonus.
