Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley team up on a murder investigation in Greece.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Amazon MGM Studios’ Deadly heat starring Gordon-Levitt, 43, as private investigator Nick Bali, who works on the Greek island of Crete. He is hired to investigate the accidental death of a young man from a wealthy family on the island.

Richard Madden plays both victim Leo Vardakis and his identical twin brother Elias, while Woodley, 32, is Elias’ wife, who suspects someone in the Vardakis family wants to kill one of the twins.

As Detective Bali begins his investigation, he discovers that the wealthy family controls much of what happens on the island. He is confronted with his own troubled past and estranged family.

“There’s a part of me, and I think there’s a part of so many of us, that just loves to read a good mystery,” Gordon-Levitt tells PEOPLE of the film and the short story it’s based on, Jo Nesbø’s The jealous man.

He, Woodley and Madden (38) filmed much of the movie on location in Crete. Gordon-Levitt recalls that filming the movie satisfied a lifelong urge to travel for work.

“I just consider it a privilege. I feel so lucky,” he says. “I’ve been to so many different places and there are very, very few places I’ve been that are more beautiful than the island of Crete. I’ve never been to Greece before I got to make this film, and it’s a cliché — the beauty of Greece — but it’s a cliché for a reason. It’s bloody beautiful!”

The film marks a reunion for Gordon-Levitt and Woodley, who last starred together in the 2016 film. Snow WhiteGordon-Levitt says he and Woodley hadn’t spoken in a few years, but they “jumped right back into all the comfort and friendship that you had in the past.”

“That’s how you know he’s a really good friend, and that’s like with Shae,” he adds. “I was like, ‘Hey, do you want to go to Greece?’ I’m so glad it worked out.”

“I think if you’re like me and you’re seduced by juicy characters, beautiful environments, Shea and Richard are both so good in the setting of the island of Crete, you really couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place in the world,” Gordon-Levitt says. “If you just want to get a vibe going, I think you’ll enjoy this film.”

Deadly heat will be streaming worldwide on Prime Video starting September 26.
