There may be no player and team in the NFL worse off heading into Week 2 than quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns. Watson is facing a new lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault and battery. A statement from Watson’s attorney denies the allegations. Because the case is civil, not criminal, the NFL has not placed Watson on the exempt list. He is expected to play Sunday against the Jaguars.

Even with Watson, the Browns will be underdogs as they try to rebound from a Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are also coming off a loss themselves.

The Browns’ offense was a shambles in Week 1, as injuries to the offensive line and the continued absence of running back Nick Chubb helped stall the running game. Meanwhile, Watson’s continued ineffectiveness as a passer began to raise questions about when we might actually see backup Jameis Winston get some playing time.

Watson faces a Jacksonville defense that ranked in the bottom 10 in yards allowed in 2023 and gave up 400 yards in an overtime loss to Miami in Week 1. With tackle Jack Conklin and Jedrick Willis Jr. out for the Browns, that could lead to more protection issues and problems for the offense.

The Jaguars have their own offensive woes after a disappointing Week 1 performance. It won’t get much easier with Myles Garrett and a Browns defense looming. Cleveland ranked No. 1 in the NFL in yards allowed last season.

Last season, the Browns were just 2-6-1 against the spread when visiting, including 1-3-1 as visiting underdogs.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars were just 3-5 against the spread at home, one of the worst records in the league.
