Donald Trump safe after gunfire at Trump International Golf Club

Former President Donald Trump is safe after the Secret Service shot an armed man outside the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, sources told Fox News.

Authorities are treating the case as a possible assassination attempt and have arrested a suspect, a U.S. official told Fox News. The man, who was not immediately identified, was reportedly armed with a rifle when officers fired at him.

“This doesn’t appear to be just some random guy with an AK-47 walking around in front of Trump’s club,” the official added.

Fox News’ Lucas Tomlinson confirmed that the Secret Service opened fire after seeing a man raise an AK-47. The suspect fled in a car but was quickly captured, authorities said.

Trump was on the fifth hole of his course when the shots rang out, prompting his protective detail to surround him and escort him to the safety of the clubhouse. The incident could prove to be the second attempt on the former president’s life in just two months.

Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, citing local law enforcement, said the suspect’s gun was found in the bushes. Four shots were fired, Hannity also confirmed through local law enforcement. Hannity said Trump’s first reaction at the clubhouse was to make sure everyone was OK.

Fox News host Bret Baier also spoke with Trump, who praised the Secret Service for its swift action. Trump confirmed to Baier that he was fine and that there was no evidence of any shots fired near him or that shots were fired near him.

“Tell everyone I’m fine and the Secret Service did a great job,” Trump told Baier.

The Secret Service is working closely with authorities and is investigating the situation. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has been notified.

“The Secret Service, in coordination with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. The former President is safe,” the agency confirmed in a message posted on X.

The White House has acknowledged the incident.

“The President and Vice President have been briefed on the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was playing golf, and are relieved that he is safe. They are being updated regularly by their teams,” the White House said in a statement.

This latest shooting at Trump comes nearly two months after the attempted assassination of the former president. Trump was shot in the ear at a rally on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. A man attending the rally, volunteer firefighter Cat. Corey Comperatore, was killed by the gunman, who was himself shot by a Secret Service sniper.

Fox News Digital has confirmed that Trump National Golf Club has been closed as a precaution.
