Dan Campbell takes blame for Lions late-half mistake against Buccaneers

play

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell took the blame for his team’s late-half humiliation Sunday against the Tampa Bay Bucs at Ford Field in Week 2 of the NFL regular season. The play proved to be a major factor in the Lions’ 20-16 loss.

The Lions cost themselves three points when the field goal unit rushed the field while Jared Goff and the offense drove the ball in on third down with seconds left at the Buccaneers’ 9-yard line. The Lions were penalized for having too many men on the field and the clock expired after a 10-second runoff.

“Half the team ran onto the field,” Fox analyst Daryl Johnston said during the broadcast.

The Lions went into halftime trailing the Buccaneers 13-6, with rising kicker Jake Bates providing the offense with two field goals. They had a chance on a 26-yard field goal for Bates.

Campbell was visibly frustrated on the sideline after the miscommunication and was interviewed by Fox reporter Laura Okmin upon his entrance into the second half.

“Listen, 100 percent on the head coach here,” Campbell began when asked what happened. “He totally screwed my team. That’s on me, we’re going for the clock, clock it, it’s not a ‘Hurricane’ (call). I made a decision that I shouldn’t have made, and our team is going to have to overcome it. That’s the bottom line.”

The Lions opened the second half by again pushing deep into Bucs territory, but had to settle for Bates’ third goal.

The Lions took their first lead (16-13) late in the third quarter thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run from David Montgomery, but Baker Mayfield quickly answered with an 11-yard run to give the Bucs a 20-16 lead with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.
