Steelers’ Russell Wilson will not play against the Broncos, source says

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson, who is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, is not expected to play, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter Saturday night.

Wilson, who aggravated a calf injury in training camp during practice for Week 1, was inactive against the Atlanta Falcons, serving as the emergency third quarterback. The 35-year-old quarterback was also limited in practice this week.

Wilson’s expected absence makes it likely that Justin Fields will make his second start of the season. Fields had a solid but unspectacular performance in the Steelers’ 18-10 win over the Falcons last week in place of Wilson.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin began the week by saying, “We’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback. I think that’s the right way to do it. Speculating is a waste of time. Russell is injured. He’s not available for us.”

Wilson was given the starting job by the Steelers, but a calf injury that plagued him all summer flared up again last week, sidelining him.
