Bears lose to Texans on Sunday Night Football

But the Bears’ offense was limited to three points in the second half, with eight drives resulting in four punts, two interceptions, a field goal and a turnover on downs.

Williams completed 23 of 37 passes for 174 yards with no TDs, two interceptions and a 51.0 passer rating. Bears running backs D’Andre Swift (14 carries for 18 yards) and Herbert (3 yards on 2 carries) rushed for a combined 71 yards on 22 attempts.

CJ Stroud completed 23 of 36 passes for 260 yards, one touchdown and a 94.7 rating.

The Texans took a 3-0 lead on the game’s opening possession on Fairbairn’s 56-yard field goal. The drive was buoyed by Stroud’s 8-yard pass to running back Joe Mixon on third-and-6.

The Bears responded, tying the score at 3-3 with a 53-yard field goal by Cairo Santos. Williams completed 5 of 5 passes for 55 yards in the possession, including a 14-yard laser to receiver DeAndre Carter on the right sideline on third-and-12.

The Texans took a 10-3 lead on Stroud’s 28-yard touchdown pass to receiver Nico Collins on the first play of the second quarter. The TD came one snap after Collins was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for hitting cornerback Tyrique Stevenson in the facemask after the whistle.

Stroud was 4 of 4 for 70 yards on the drive, including an 18-yard completion to tight end Cade Stover on a play-action pass on fourth-and-1 from the 50.

After the Bears went three-and-out, the Texans extended their lead to 13-3 on Fairbairn’s 47-yard field goal. The drive was continued by Stroud’s 21-yard pass to receiver Stefon Diggs on third-and-10 from the Houston 23.

The Bears later scored their first offensive touchdown on Herbert’s 2-yard run, cutting the lead to 13-10 with :32 left in the half. The TD came after Carter drew a pass interference penalty on safety Calen Bullock at the Texans’ 6 on a third-and-14 play from the 30.

Fairbairn’s 59-yard field goal extended the lead to 16-10 with :01 left in the half. The kick was set up by Stroud’s 16-yard pass to Collins along the sideline.

Both teams needed to score on their first three possessions of the second half, but Williams’ long pass, intended for DJ Moore, was intercepted by cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. at the Houston 34-yard line. It was the first turnover for either team of the game.

The Texans converted the pass for a 53-yard field goal by Fairbairn, extending the margin to 19-10 with 13:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Williams was then intercepted on a second straight drive when his pass intended for Cole Kmet was intercepted by cornerback Kamari Lassiter.

The Texans reached the Bears’ 4 on the ensuing drive. But on first-and-goal, Andrew Billings forced running back Cam Akers into a fumble and Kevin Byard III recovered the ball at the 3.

After the takeaway, Santos made it a one-score game at 19-13 with a 54-yard field goal with 2:51 remaining to cap a 12-play drive. The Bears defense then forced a punt on Houston’s next possession, and the offense took over at the Chicago 20 with 1:37 remaining. But after Williams’ 27-yard completion to Rome Odunze, the Bears gave the ball away on downs after two incompletions, a sack and an illegal formation penalty.

The loss brought the Bears to 1-1, and they’ll hit the road again next Sunday to face the Colts in Indianapolis.
