Emmys 2024: The Biggest Moments

Dand Eugene Levy have come a long way from the fictional town of Middle of Nowhere Schitt’s Creek. The hit father-son series won nine primetime Emmys, and on Sunday night the two hosted the 76th Emmy Awards.

The ceremony made history before it even began. ShogunThe FX drama set in feudal Japan was nominated for 25 Emmys and won 18 awards Sunday night, setting a new record for most wins by a show in a single season. And Tricks proved the old adage that third time’s the charm when the third season took home the award for Best Comedy Series.

The Bear entered the ceremony with 23 nominations in the comedy category, making it the most-nominated comedy in Emmy history. During the show’s intro on Sunday night, Eugene Levy poked The Bearjoking about the debate over the nomination of the often dramatic show in the comedy categories: “In the true spirit of The Bear“We’re not going to make any jokes.”

That was hardly the case. The hosts, presenters and winners made many hilarious jokes, and The Bear did pretty well for itself (aside from losing the top comedy honor), regardless of genre. Here are some of the most memorable moments from the night.

Best Father-Son Host Couple

Eugene Levy said he’s played many fathers, but his most rewarding father role was playing Dan’s father in Schitt’s Creek “Because it won me my first Emmy for acting.”

The duo had plenty of playful jabs aimed at the streaming services, with Dan describing the Emmys as “network television’s biggest night to honor movie stars on streaming services.”

The duo traded barbs between the hosts, with Dan Levy telling the audience that his father almost succeeded in landing the role of gruff White House communications director The West Wing—rubbing in that Richard Schiff won an Emmy for the role. Eugene shot back, “So how was your audition for Rijpley?”

Great presenter trifecta

Only murders in the building stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez turned the evening’s first award presentation into a comedy act, with Martin telling Short, “What an honor it is to work with someone who looks like a former female tennis champion.” Gomez couldn’t keep a straight face.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series They Presented went to Ebon Moss-Bachrach, aka Richie, aka Cousin for The Bear.

The Bear eat the prizes

In addition to Moss-Bachrach’s victory, The Bear dominated the major acting awards for a comedy series.

Liza Colón-Zayas may have been sous chef on The BearBut she was front and center at the Emmys, accepting her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (although some viewers felt her Season 3 performance was more deserving than the one she won for, Season 2). She thanked her husband and called out other Latinas in the industry. Her words of wisdom to the audience: “Vote. Vote for your rights.”

And the Television Academy said “Yes, Chef!” to Jeremy Allen White, who won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

The smartest acceptance speech

TV legend Jean Smart of Tricks accepted the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, saying, “I really appreciate this because I just don’t get enough attention.”

She then proceeded to confuse HBO and Max, eventually pausing with her head down, looking up and complaining to the audience about how many different streaming sites there were. It was Smart’s third Emmy for her role as Deborah Vance.

Billy Crystal, winner of six Primetime Emmy Awards, took the stage to present the award for Outstanding Talk Show, saying, “It’s great to be…anywhere.”

He pulled out what he claims is a diary of his first appearances on the nominated shows, so when he announced the nominees, he read out his first impressions of the various talk show hosts. For the Daily show, He said Jon Stewart told him they were going to have dinner after Crystal’s appearance on the show, but he waited and the host never showed up. Same goes for Seth Meyers. His first impression of Stephen Colbert: “Great guy, but I wonder if he’s ever seen himself naked.” The award went to The daily showwhere Stewart surprisingly returned to once a week this year, after a fruitless search for a replacement for Trevor Noah.

Baby reindeer sleighing!

Scottish comedian Richard Gadd ran up and down the stage all evening accepting awards for his acting and writing in a short series.

Gadd also said Baby reindeer Emmy success is proof that you don’t necessarily need the backing of a major studio to make a hit — “just good stories that resonate with our times.” He urged creatives to “explore the uncomfortable and dare to fail to achieve something.”

A West Wing meeting

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Emmy-winning drama, cast members from the West Wing appeared in a makeshift Oval Office to present the award for Best Drama Series, which went to Shogun. Allison Janey and Richard Schiff noted how great it was that writers had to “use their imaginations” to come up with their storylines, whereas today “storylines can be plucked right out of the news.” They also urged the public to vote in the 2024 presidential election.

Tricks the hacking

Tricks—— a show about the love-hate relationship between a veteran comedian and her woke 20-something comedy writer — won the comedy category’s top awards, the Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. While accepting the award for Best Comedy Series, co-creator Lucia Aniello explained why comedy is universal: “If you laugh with someone, you have something in common with them.”

TV doctors show off their funny bones

Some of the hosts were grouped together based on their TV roles. There were TV dads, TV moms, TV agents, lawyers and villains. The TV doctor lineup got the biggest laughs when they talked about the people who motivated them while playing doctors. Mekhi Phifer of THERE said he was inspired by the doctors in his life. Mindy Kaling, who played a gynecologist in The Mindy Project, said she was inspired by her own OBGYN mother. And Zach Braff of scrubbing said he was inspired to work as a waiter in Beverly Hills and eat portions of 7 to 11 — half for lunch, half for dinner: “I was inspired to stop living like that.”

Singer of the night

“Despite my name, I come in peace,” screenwriter Will Smith said upon accepting the award for Best Screenplay for a Drama Series. Slow horses. He made a nod to the fact that he had the same name as the actor Will Smith, who punched Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
