Varsity & JV: Winners and Losers of the Steelers’ 13-6 Win over Broncos

The Pittsburgh Steelers are now 2-0 and two games ahead of the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North after a 13-6 win over the Denver Broncos. Who stood out? Here are the varsity and JV players from Week 2:

University team

S DeShon Elliott

Elliott could be called the best addition of the offseason. He led the team with nine tackles, including a tackle for loss on third and short to force a Broncos run. He flew all over the secondary, as well as into the box to make stops all afternoon, proving what a versatile weapon he is on defense.

CB Cory Trice

What a moment for your first interception. Much like Joey Porter against the Ravens a year ago, Trice intercepted Bo Nix in the end zone to kill a scoring opportunity, and it would prove crucial to the win. After everything Trice has been through, it was great to see him make that play.

RAND Alex Highsmith

Highsmith made an immediate impact early in the game, recording a tackle for loss and a sack in the first quarter. He finished the day with four tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.

QB Justin Fields

Fields played well, and it’s unfortunate that those who didn’t watch the game and only look at the box scores look at his numbers and say he stinks – he doesn’t. His back shoulder ball to Darnell Washington was perfectly placed for a touchdown. He threw a really good throw to Pat Freiermuth to get them in the red zone and set up the score. He threw one of the prettiest balls I’ve ever seen 51 yards downfield on a rope to George Pickens – it was nullified by a holding call. He threw a touchdown to Pickens to end the first half – it was nullified by offensive pass interference on Van Jefferson. The offense slowed down considerably in the second half, but when you take those nullified plays into account, Fields went 15 of 22 for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

WR George Pickens

Similar to Fields, if you take away the penalties outside of his control, he has four catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. He was great and had the NFL’s best cornerback in ruins in the first half.

C Zach Frazier

The rookie has yet to give up a pressure in two games. The Steelers have their center of the future after a lengthy rotating door following Maurkice Pouncey’s retirement.

CB Joey Porter Jr

Once again, a very good receiver was put on Porter Island. According to PFF, Porter allowed just two catches for 26 yards on the day, after allowing one catch for seven yards in Week 1 — the definition of a lockdown cornerback.

S Minkah Fitzpatrick

Minkah was everywhere, hogging passing lanes. He was also second on the team with seven tackles. After two games, he’s flying all over the field and looks like the Minkah of old – now he just needs that first interception.

EDGE TJ Watt

Another good day for Watt. He had a sack, which gives him 98.5 points for his career, and also had two tackles for loss.

Junior Varsity

OT Broderick Jones

Three penalties on one drive, one of which negated a 51-yard completion that could have led to another touchdown for the Steelers. I defended Jones loudly and clearly, but that was a pathetic performance.

WR Van Jefferson

His offensive pass interference cost him a touchdown and he, like all the other receivers except George Pickens, has not really distinguished himself as a legitimate No. 2 receiver.

Punish

Just penalties as a whole. 10 for 79 yards, and that’s not counting the penalties that were offset by Broncos penalties. This team has a serious problem in two games that needs to be addressed.
