Kirk Herbstreit ranks the best performing teams of Week 3

Week 3 of the college football season was a fun week, with some chaotic scorelines. As usual, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit decided to highlight a few programs and named his top performing teams from Saturday’s list.

Herbstreit decided to praise seven teams, only three of which are members of power conferences. A few early-season rivalries were in the spotlight, and when you win those games, they mean a lot more in the end.

The Apple Cup is full of hate, especially with the way conference realignment has played out over the last few years. But as a head coach Jake Dickert said, Washington State went there because they loved themselves, not out of hatred for Washington.

However Washington State’s season goes, this win will be special for them. Big picture: A 3-0 start for the Cougars will have them rolling in 2024.

The first test of the Kalen DeBoer era, Alabama came through with flying colors in Madison. While Wisconsin started with an opening drive field goal, it was all Crimson Tide from there on.

DeBoer hopes to keep the standard pretty high in Tuscaloosa and did so with a blowout. Their next game, where we can really learn something about Alabama, is against Georgia on September 28th.

Like Washington State, a rivalry win brings out a little more emotion for Pitt. The Backyard Brawl is as intense as any game in the country, and it certainly delivered on Saturday.

Head coach Pat Narduzzi might consider that his team is 2-0 on the week, by West Virginia and the officials. Herbstreit was impressed regardless and placed Pitt at No. 3 in Week 3.

Entering the locker room for halftime, not many expected UCF to start their Big 12 campaign with a win. The Knights trailed by two scores and at one point the deficit was TCU grew to 21 at the start of the third quarter.

UCF continued to gain momentum in the second half and managed to win in the final minute of the game. Gus MalzhanThe team won just one Big 12 game away in 2023 and tied that number in 2024.

Any MAC team coming into SEC Country and winning would make huge headlines. But Toledo went to Starkville and beat State of Mississippiwon 41-17.

At halftime, the score was the infamous 28-3, but it was not a historic comeback for the home team. Instead, it was a historic victory for the Rockets and the entire MAC.

6. Georgia State Panthers

Another non-power conference goes into an SEC stadium and comes away with a win. This one was a little more exciting, as Georgia State won Vanderbilt with four for their second win of the 2024 season.

Wide receiver Ted Hurst caught the game-winning touchdown pass from 25 yards with 15 seconds left. A stunned Nashville crowd as the Sun Belt becomes the latest conference to claim a victory over the SEC.

The misery continued for Mike Norvell and it came at the expense of his former program. Memphis defeated State of Florida thanks to an impressive defensive performance.

The Tigers gave up just 238 yards of offense, also forcing three turnovers. A perfect recipe for a road win and potentially hurting your chances of making the College American Football Playoffs.
