Sean Combs accused of sex trafficking and racketeering

Sean “Diddy” Combs faces more than 20 years in prison if convicted of the charges unsealed early this morning in a three-count indictment.

The “Missing You” rapper was arrested by federal authorities at a New York hotel last night and is formally charged with racketeering, human trafficking and transportation for the purpose of prostitution.

“For decades, SEAN COMBS, aka “Puff Daddy,” aka “P. Diddy,” aka “Diddy,” aka “PD,” aka “Love,” abused, threatened, and coerced the defendant, women, and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct,” according to the newly unsealed indictment against the oft-accused producer and recording artist.

“To do this, COMBS relied on the employees, resources and influence of the multifaceted business empire he led and controlled, creating a criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in, and attempted to engage in, crimes including sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice,” according to the filing by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams’ office.

In language that closely resembles the string of sexual abuse allegations and other lawsuits against Combs in recent months, the complaint alleges that Combs used drugs, violence and career advancement in the music industry to lure and control his victims, entourage and others. The rapper also used shame and blackmail to keep people from speaking out. “The sensitive, embarrassing and incriminating recordings he made during Freak Offs as collateral to ensure the victims’ continued compliance and silence,” the unsealed complaint reads.

Combs is currently being arraigned in a Manhattan courtroom. According to his attorney, Combs is expected to enter a plea of not guilty. “He’s going to fight this with all of his energy and all of his might and the full confidence of his lawyers,” attorney Marc Agnifilo said outside the federal building this morning.

In addition to a federal prison sentence, self-proclaimed billionaire Combs could face a serious financial hit. The government plans to seize “all property, real and personal” and an unspecified “amount of money” from the alleged crimes, the indictment says.

After what a law enforcement source told me was “months and months of investigation by coordinating agencies,” Combs’ Sept. 16 arrest is directly related to raids that took place earlier this year on the rapper’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has scheduled a news conference for 8:30 a.m. PT to discuss Comb’s arrest and charges.
