Rock singer, hitmaker and actor dies at age 78

JD Souther died Tuesday, according to several reports.

He was 78.

Variety reported that Souther’s spokespeople could not release a cause of death, but said he died peacefully at home.

Don’t know Souther’s name? Well, rock music fans definitely should, because he was credited with helping write some of the Eagles’ biggest hits, including “New Kid in Town” and “Best of My Love.”

According to Variety, Souther also had a solid singing career, even recording a Top 10 hit, “You’re Only Lonely.” That career, the site noted, continued until five days ago, when Southern took the stage to perform.

Souther also wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt, the Chicks, George Strait and Bonnie Rait, in addition to writing a long list of songs with the Eagles.

When asked if it bothered him that the Eagles were having big hits with his songs, he told Creative Independent he would reply, “Do you want to see the checks?”

“Even Glenn Frey once said — and he was kind of joking because he knows how it is with royalties — but he said, ‘One of the reasons J.D. didn’t have a bigger solo career is because he gave us or Linda Ronstadt most of his songs,'” Souther said in the same interview. “And that’s kind of true. The closest I ever got to being really famous was during the ‘You’re Only Lonely’ period, and I didn’t really enjoy that, to be honest. It’s a relief in some ways, although it doesn’t pay that well.”

During his career in music, Souther was asked to try his hand at acting. That led to a role on the show, “Thirtysomething,” and several other credits, including a seven-episode stint on “Nashville” from 2012 to 2017.

Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
