In an effort to “sow discord and influence the outcome of the U.S. election,” Iranian cyber actors sent messages over the summer to people associated with then-President Biden’s re-election campaign. The messages contained material stolen from former President Trump’s campaign, U.S. agencies said.

“In late June and early July, Iranian malicious cyber actors sent unsolicited emails to individuals then affiliated with President Biden’s campaign. These emails included an excerpt from stolen, non-public materials from former President Trump’s campaign embedded in the text of the emails,” the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The authorities noted that there is currently no information on whether the recipients responded to the messages.

US intelligence agencies also allege that Iran has been interfering in the election since June and sending stolen Trump campaign materials to US media organizations.

“In addition, since June, malicious Iranian cyber actors have continued their efforts to deliver stolen, non-public materials related to former President Trump’s campaign to U.S. media organizations,” the researchers said.

According to the agencies, Iran’s continued interference in the election will “fuel divisions and undermine confidence in our electoral process.”

“As the threat response leader, the FBI has monitored this activity, engaged with the victims, and will continue to investigate and gather information to prosecute and disrupt the threat actors responsible,” they said. “Foreign actors are ramping up their election influence activities as November approaches.”

Iran is not the only foreign adversary accused of interfering in the 2024 presidential election. On July 10, ODNI officials Russia called the “biggest threat” to the elections.
