Reporter Olivia Nuzzi on leave after revelation of alleged personal relationship with RFK Jr | US news

A top political journalist for New York magazine has resigned from the publication after it emerged she had a personal relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a scion of the Kennedy dynasty who ran a high-profile independent campaign for the White House before endorsing Donald Trump.

Olivia Nuzzi, who has written extensive, long-form pieces on American politics, including RFK Jr., violated the magazine’s standards for disclosing conflicts of interest, the publication said in a statement.

“Our Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi has acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she entered into a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while covering the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards regarding conflicts of interest and disclosure,” New York said.

It added: “Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign. An internal review of her published work found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party investigation. We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.”

In a statement, Nuzzi acknowledged the relationship but said it was not romantic or physical and that the relationship developed after Nuzzi wrote a piece about Kennedy and his erratic and ultimately doomed race to the White House.

Nuzzi said earlier this year that “the nature of the communications between me and a former reporter became personal.”

“At the time, I did not report on the subject directly or use them as a source,” she said. “The relationship was never physical, but should have been made public to avoid the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I disappointed, particularly my colleagues in New York.”

A spokesperson for RFK Jr. told CNN that Kennedy “met Olivia Nuzzi only once in his life for an interview she requested, which resulted in a damning article.”

RFK Jr. is the son of Robert Francis Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 while running for the Democratic nomination for president, nearly five years after his brother and U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

RFK Jr.’s independent campaign to challenge either the Democrats or Republicans in 2024 never really got off the ground. Moreover, his extreme positions on certain issues, particularly vaccines, have not made him popular with average Americans.

Nuzzi has become a prominent American journalist and television pundit. One of her most recent pieces featured an interview with Donald Trump, in which the former US president invited her to examine his ear, which had been injured in an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. She recounted the experience, writing: “Never did an ear seem to have endured less.”
