    Michigan State football and Boston College square off on a rainy night in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, with tonight’s game being broadcast and streamed on the ACC Network. You can also watch on Fubo (free trial).

    The Spartans had a strong first half, taking a touchdown lead into halftime. However, things quickly turned dicey for MSU thanks to a fumble on the opening kickoff and an Aidan Chiles interception that gave BC all the momentum.

    MSU is looking to go 4-0 for the first time since 2021 in its first season under new head coach Jonathan Smith, led by 19-year-old sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles, who joined Smith from Oregon State. Chiles had 102 yards through the air and 62 on the ground in the first half, helping the Spartans stay in control.

    The Spartans are short four receivers, including freshman receiver Nick Marsh, who stole the show against the Terrapins. Wideouts Jaron Glover and Antonio Gates Jr. were also ruled out, along with Alante Brown, who suffered a serious injury in the opener against Florida Atlantic. The Spartans are also dealing with injuries on the offensive line, so running back Nate Carter could struggle as MSU looks to set the tone up front.

    MSU is a 4½-point underdog to BC (2-1), which lost 27-21 last week at then-No. 8 Missouri.

    It’s a game of inches, and the Spartans narrowly won the battle for them. Boston College moved the ball all the way into MSU territory and it looked like the Eagles were going to score until the Spartans forced a Castellanos fumble at the 1-yard line. After a review, it was determined that BC held the ball. The Eagles decided to go for it and were stopped by the Spartan defense.

    What could have been. On third-and-8 from the BC 33-yard line, Montorie Foster Jr. was as open as a wide receiver can be due to a BC miscommunication, but Chiles knocked him down and the pass went to the turf. Luckily for the Spartans, they have kicker Jonathan Kim, who added his third field goal with a 51-yard bomb to tie the game

    After a great stop by the defense, Aidan Chiles gave the ball right back to BC with about as bad a drive as you can get. Offensive lineman Stanton Ramil got a false start, pushing the offense back 5 yards before the drive could begin, and seconds later Chiles missed another pass right into the hands of BC’s Amari Jackson. It was a close call.

    On the first play after the interception, Treshaun Ward came to the outside of the line and scored a touchdown from 36 yards out, giving BC a 16-13 lead.

    You just can’t do that. When MSU running back Kay’ron Lynch-Adams came out of the break with all the momentum, he took the opening kickoff out of the end zone and quickly fumbled it inside the MSU 10-yard line. It looked like a complete disaster, but the Spartans defense came up with a huge stop, pushing Castellanos and BC’s offense back, forcing a field goal.

    The Spartans again took advantage of their good field position and went to the BC 6-yard line, with Chiles showing off his athleticism. The Spartans got to the 5-yard line on four plays of 9 yards or more, but had to settle for another Jonathan Kim field goal after stalling near the end zone. The Spartans got the ball back at halftime, holding a touchdown lead on a rainy Massachusetts day.

    Three plays after Aidan Chiles made one of the most impressive escapes from the pocket you’ll ever see, resulting in a gain of 22 yards, the second-year quarterback showed he’s still a work in progress. Chiles had tight end Jack Velling open over the middle for what would have been a first down when he floated the pass that was intercepted by BC’s Carter Davis. Until proven otherwise, this is the Aidan Chiles experience.

    That was a big comeback. Despite missing a potential walk-in touchdown earlier in the drive, the Spartans were still able to put 7 points on the board thanks to a 40-yard connection over the middle between Aidan Chiles and Montorie Foster Jr. BC tackled Foster just short of the end zone and MSU decided to keep it in Chiles’ hands, using the “tush-push” or “brotherly shove” made famous by the Philadelphia Eagles to take their second lead.

    MSU has struggled to stop BC’s run game. The Eagles took their first lead with an 11-play, 68-yard drive, capped by an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Turbo Richards. The Spartans will have to slow down the run game to have a chance.

    After a costly (and perhaps soft) penalty, BC entered MSU territory when linebacker Cal Haladay came up with a clutch strip that the Spartans recovered at MSU’s 7-yard line, stealing a scoring opportunity from the Eagles. The momentum switch didn’t last long, as MSU went three-and-out and punted the ball back to BC.

    The Spartans had a chance with a bad BC punt and took advantage, but despite strong field position, they couldn’t score a touchdown. MSU picked up 26 yards – 13 on the ground and 13 through the air – and scored a Jonathan Kim kick to score the game’s first points.

    Michigan State’s defense got going and got the ball back to their offense quickly after some clean tackles. Defensive lineman Quindarius Dunnigan finished the drive with a sack of BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos and the Eagles didn’t have a great run, giving the Spartans the ball at the Boston College 49-yard line.
