Report: ‘Several Teams’ Inquiring About Trading for Panthers QB Bryce Young

Now that the Panthers have thrown in the towel on the Bryce Young experiment, other teams see an opportunity to buy low.

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, “multiple teams” have inquired about a trade for the first overall pick in the 2023 draft. Others have weighed the possibility internally in the days since Young was benched for the veteran Andy Dalton.

The Panthers, according to Schefter, have no intention of trading Young. However, as we’ve seen time and time again, intentions can change quickly; often, the pre-trade conversation is simply an attempt to get the best deal possible.

For the Panthers, the best possible deal will likely come after the current season, when the inevitable list of teams looking for new quarterbacks is completed. That said, an injury to a starter could change everything, creating desperation for the team in need of a quarterback and, in turn, a bigger and better catch for the Panthers.

The Panthers will feel compelled to make the best possible deal for Young considering what they gave up to acquire him: the 2023 ninth pick, receiver DJ Moore, the 2023 second-round pick, the 2024 first-round pick (which ended up being the first) and the 2025 second-round pick.

What could they really get at this point? Not a first-round pick. Maybe a second-round pick to replace whoever they send to Chicago in the next draft.

Whatever they can get, or can’t get, the Panthers should do well for Young and trade him. It doesn’t have to happen in the next six weeks and two days (which is when the 2024 trade window closes). It would have to happen on the first day of the 2025 league year, giving him a fair chance to restart his career with a new team.

Young was unreachable for the No. 1 overall pick. Many teams would have taken him there. If those teams are willing to attribute much of Young’s problems to the Panthers’ inherent dysfunction, some of those teams will be willing to make a move.

Either way, it’s an awkward, rift-like sales pitch from the Panthers.

It’s not him, it’s us.
