5 Lessons from the Packers’ Win over the Titans

NASHVILLE – Backup QB Malik Willis won his second straight start in place of Jordan Love as the Packers defeated the Titans 30-14 on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

Green Bay is now 2-1 and here are five lessons we learned from the win:

  1. Willis was better than last week.

Willis returned to his old home base of Nashville and had to do more for the Packers’ offense than he did a week ago, when Green Bay completely dominated the action with its ground game.

The Packers still ran the ball well (188 rushing yards), but Willis converted multiple third downs with game-winning throws, used his own legs to move the ball early in the game and didn’t give the ball away for the second straight game.

“That’s the quarterback’s biggest job, is to take care of the football,” head coach Matt LaFleur said. “He’s done a great job of not compromising the ball. It’s allowed us to open up some things.”

A third-down conversion on the opening possession on a deep ball to Christian Watson set the stage for a pair of third-and-longs to Romeo Doubs and Watson (two catches, 67 yards) later in the first half. Willis’ sparkling 120.9 passer rating included 13 completions on 19 attempts for 202 yards and a TD.

He also utilized the zone read while running, along with a number of scrambles, to lead the team with 73 rushing yards on six attempts, all in the first half.

β€œIt definitely gives you more confidence in what you’re doing, 100 percent,” LaFleur said of the early success.

β€œI can’t say enough about him, just the way he’s come into our offense and been productive.

“Hats off to him, hats off to everyone around him, guys who go out of their way to support him.”
