Netflix viewers warned about ‘crazy and horrifying’ scene in Menendez brothers’ show that left them ‘shocked’

Netflix viewers have been warned about a “very graphic” murder scene in the streamer’s new series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, with many admitting they were “shocked” and “had a hard time watching.”

The second installment of the gruesome series—which first focused on Jeffrey Dahmer—follows the true-life murders of José and Kitty Menéndez in 1989, who were killed by their sons Erik and Lyle.

The controversial series has been in the spotlight since its launch on the platform on Thursday, with viewers admitting it was a tough story to digest, even for true crime fans with a strong stomach.

Fans were shocked to see the “horrific” and “hard to watch” murder scene, which sees the siblings murder their own parents in their Beverly Hills mansion.

Many viewers shared their thoughts about the new show on X, formerly Twitter, warning them about the gruesome scene. They wrote:

‘The murder scene in this Menendez Brothers series on Netflix is fucking CRAZY. Omg’;

‘I never saw Dahmer because I knew it would be too intense for me to watch, but I’m watching the first episode of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story now and, MY GOD, the murder scene is so graphic’;

‘Okay, I did NOT expect this much graphic violence in The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’;

‘I was actually shocked by how graphic the murder scene was. It’s Ryan Murphy, it shouldn’t have been me, but it was horrifying to watch. Both of those guys are actually incredible’;

‘Okay, the show REALLY went all out with the graphic violence of the Kitty and Jose Menendez shooting in the first episode, about halfway through. The brothers just made fun of their parents and then went to the movies and a bar to make sure they were seen in public’;

‘Fam, I’m watching Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story… That scene where they kill their parents, they didn’t have to do it. SHEESH.’

The show also came under fire after show creator Ryan Murphy (who created Dahmer, Glee and American Horror Story) was criticized for having brothers Erik and Lyle kiss. Viewers said the “sick” creator “invented” the incestuous storyline.

In the series’ second episode, Spree, creator Murphy hints that the brothers had a romantic relationship. Lyle (played by Nicholas Chavez) kisses his brother (Cooper Koch) after encouraging him to live a life of luxury while they wait to find out if they’ve been included in their deceased parents’ will.

When Erik suggests that they should pay more attention to their spending, his sibling starts swearing violently, then leans over and kisses him on the lips.

Lyle grabs his brother’s face and yells, “You don’t get it. You don’t get it at all, Erik, we did it.”

He puts his hands on Erik’s neck and continues: ‘We fucking did it. Okay, our lives were one thing and we decided we weren’t going to take that anymore, right?

‘We wanted more out of life, so we did what we had to do. We made a f***ing decision and now we have it and now we have that life, and we’re never f***ing looking back.

‘So from now on we’re going to demand more from life and that means a few things, but the most important thing is that you don’t drink tap water anymore, Erik.

“Are we in that will? Probably not. So, we’re going to find the will and we’re going to destroy it. But until then, we’re going to live our best lives.”

Lyle then leans forward and kisses Erik, who smiles at the contact.

He tilts his head back and adds, “Okay? And we’re never going back. Never!”

Viewers have condemned the “disgusting” scene, accusing Murphy of rewriting history.

One of them said about X: ‘If Ryan wanted to make a series about twin brothers who develop an intimate relationship with each other because of shared sexual trauma and abuse by their parents, he should have written a new story.

“You cannot rewrite the experiences of real people and REAL VICTIMS to suit your own needs!”

Another wrote: ‘Why is he obsessed with making the brothers look like lovers. It’s disgusting. Let the acting do the talking. And the actors do a good job, that’s all.’

A third added: ‘I hate Ryan Murphy… Why do they make up something like homoeroticism between siblings who are victims of child sexual abuse???’

“This literally ruins it for me,” a fourth continued. “Why is Ryan doing this this way? They’re brothers and they’re the victims. This is disgusting.”

A fifth said: ‘The Menendez brothers were victims of sexual abuse and ultimately took revenge on their abusers. This disgusting piece of trash has turned their story into an incestuous fanfic.

‘Hell ain’t hot enough for Ryan Murphy.’

“Creating fanfiction that features incest between real brothers, especially when they themselves have been victims of abuse and incest, is absolutely disgusting and insane,” wrote a sixth. “I am literally speechless.”

Erik and Lyle were convicted in 1996 of the murder of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty.”

During their trial, the brothers testified that they committed the murders out of fear that their father would kill them. They threatened to expose him for years of sexual, emotional and physical abuse.

However, the Public Prosecution Service stated that they did this in order to inherit the millions of euros from their father’s estate.

The brothers were initially tried separately with one jury for each brother. However, both juries were unable to reach a verdict, resulting in a mistrial.

During the second trial, they were tried together by a single jury, which found them guilty after the judge excluded evidence of assault for the defense.

Both brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without possibility of parole.

The brothers’ case gained momentum in 2023 when Roy Rossello, a former lead singer of the boy band Menudo, alleged that their father raped him when he was 13.

The Menendez brothers’ attorneys also submitted a recently unearthed letter that Erik sent to his cousin Andy Cano about eight months before the murders.

“I tried to avoid Dad,” the handwritten message read.

“It still happens, Andy, but it’s worse for me now. I can’t explain it. He’s so overweight I can’t see him.

“I never know when it’s going to happen and it drives me crazy. Every night I stay up thinking he might come in. I have to get it out of my head.

“I know what you said before, but I’m scared. You just don’t know Dad like I do. He’s crazy. He warned me a hundred times not to tell anyone, especially Lyle.”

Their cousin testified that when Erik was 13, he came to him and told him that his father, Jose, was touching and “massaging” his genitals and asked if that was normal.

Another cousin, Diane Vander Molen, also said that Lyle spoke to her about the abuse when he was eight years old, and that she went to his mother to discuss his confession, but was told he was lying.
