NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Pittsburgh Steelers among league’s elite

The Pittsburgh Steelers started the 2024 season 3-0 after recording a 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3.

Pittsburgh saw another dominant performance from its defense, which limited the Chargers’ offense to just -5 total yards in the second half. Meanwhile, the offense had its best performance of the 2024 campaign thus far, and quarterback Justin Fields may have solidified his spot as the team’s starting center over Russell Wilson.

With the win, the Steelers climb back up the NFL Power Rankings from media pundits, with one even placing Pittsburgh in the top five. Here’s a look at exactly where the Steelers rank.

NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Pittsburgh Steelers

Vinnie Iyer, Sports News: 2 (+2)

I: “The Steelers don’t get a lot of style points — or points, period — but when they control the action with a commitment to the run to complement their dominant defense, the burden of winning is easy. They won’t tinker with that formula much for Mike Tomlin, especially at QB.”

Sayre Bedinger, NFL spin zone: 9

Stipulator: “There’s no denying that the Steelers are 3-0 and undefeated this season. But the Steelers need to make some big strides offensively before people really start taking them seriously as one of the best teams in the AFC. And there was some strides against the Los Angeles Chargers. Justin Fields threw for 245 yards against the Chargers and Pittsburgh was a really solid 7-of-14 on third down in this game against the Chargers. They shut Justin Herbert out of the game and it really felt like they were sailing to a win in a lot of different ways. But beyond the 3-0 start, the big question for the Steelers is whether or not Justin Fields will remain under center going forward. There were jokes going around on Twitter/X that Russell Wilson’s calf injury would linger into Week 4 after the Steelers won their third straight game to start the season, and how can you possibly move on from Fields with that track record? Fields has two touchdowns and he seems to be getting more comfortable with every passing week in Arthur Smith’s offense.”

Taylor Wirth, NBC Sports Bay Area: 10 (+3)

Of: “Justin Fields has done an admirable job replacing Russell Wilson, who is not guaranteed the starting job when he returns. Regardless of who is under center, the defense will carry them.”

Peter Dewey, Sports Illustrated: 10 (+4)

Dewey: “Justin Fields has been strong for Pittsburgh the last three weeks, and the defense has been one of the best units in the league, allowing just 26 points through three games. At 3-0, Pittsburgh looks poised to make the playoffs — especially since Mike Tomlin has never finished below .500.”
