Browns opponents point to Deshaun Watson’s flaws and trust issues

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson struggled again on Sunday as the Browns fell to the New York Giants in their Week 3 game.

Apparently other teams are really starting to notice Watson’s shortcomings.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer spoke with representatives from each of Cleveland’s three opponents so far this season, and while they acknowledged that the run game is certainly lacking and the offensive line isn’t great at protecting, there are glaring issues with Watson’s accuracy and footwork. They also surmised that some of his lapses appear to stem from a lack of confidence. So apparently the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars and Giants have all seen similar issues.

Of course, it’s difficult to blame all of Cleveland’s offensive woes on Watson.

The Browns’ offensive line has been decimated by injuries, the ground game is shaky, and even Amari Cooper struggled until Sunday, when he finally broke through with a pair of touchdown catches.

Watson is the quarterback, though, so he naturally bears the brunt of the blame. Plus, he has a fully guaranteed $230 million contract, and Cleveland spent a significant amount of draft capital to acquire him from the Houston Texans in 2022 in the first place. He was brought in to help the team overcome other offensive shortcomings, not to become a victim of them.

When you add to that the fact that more legal issues have arisen surrounding Watson, it’s clear that the 2024 season isn’t exactly looking good for the three-time Pro Bowler.

Through the first three games of the season, Watson has thrown for 551 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions while completing 57.8 percent of his passes and recording a 71.4 passer rating. The only QB in the NFL with a lower QBR through three weeks is Carolina Panthers junior Bryce Young (and he’s already been benched).

Watson had completed 21 of 37 attempts for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns’ 21-15 loss to the Giants.

Cleveland is 1-2 and will look to get back on track next week against the Las Vegas Raiders.
