Rodri was named player of the tournament at Euro 2024 for helping Spain lift the trophy, and played a key role in helping City win a fourth straight Premier League title last season.

He has lost just one match for club or country in the past 18 months, and also won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with City last season.

Since joining from Atlético Madrid in 2019, City have lost just 11% of games Rodri has played in, compared to 24% without the Spaniard.

After Sunday’s match, Guardiola described Rodri as “the best holding midfielder in the world” and “a potential winner of the Ballon d’Or”.

This month, Rodri said winning the Ballon d’Or, awarded to the best player in the world, would be “a dream”.

He made 63 appearances for City and Spain last season, and after missing the start of this season with a hamstring injury, returned two weeks ago against Brentford.

Rodri claimed players were “almost” on strike due to the increase in the number of matches on the calendar. The new Champions League format adds at least two extra matches before the knockout stages and the Club World Cup is being expanded to 32 teams.
