LOS ANGELES — The Padres were still uncertain Tuesday afternoon when they would celebrate their playoff berth.

But whenever it happens, there will undoubtedly be celebration.

“One thing I learned very early on is that every opportunity you get to celebrate in this game, you celebrate,” pitcher Joe Musgrove said. “There are certain guys that are not going to make the playoffs for us, are not going to be around, are never going to be a part of this group again, and they deserve to have the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the moment that has been built over the last six months.”

The Padres’ next win will guarantee them a playoff spot. (If that doesn’t happen on Tuesday, there are other results Wednesday or later that could guarantee the Padres a spot.)

Once the spot is secured, regardless of whether a division title is still on the line, the Padres plan to pop the champagne corks.

“We want the division, but I don’t think we’re going to celebrate any less because there’s still something to win,” Musgrove said. “Of course we’re not going to get (drunk) when we’ve got (still) games that matter. But it’s a great achievement and it deserves to be celebrated. The intensity of the celebration will (be) determined in the moment. I think we’ve got enough guys here with their eyes on the prize to bring everyone in.”

Kim update

Ha-Seong Kim is expected to spend the next few days working at the Padres’ Peoria, Arizona, facility before joining the team at Chase Field on Friday.

Whether he will be activated then or not until the postseason will become clear in the meantime as he continues to expand his throwing program.

Kim has been out since injuring his shoulder while diving back into first base on Aug. 18, aggravating a shoulder problem he has been battling since last season.

If Kim comes back, the Padres could play him at shortstop and move Xander Bogaerts back to second base. Or they could play Kim at second base to keep Bogaerts from moving again. Kim and left-hander Jake Cronenworth at second base are also under consideration.
