Adams and staff tried to cover up corruption with Turkey: charges

Mayor Eric Adams and his staff took secret steps to hide their corruption in Turkey even as federal authorities closed in on him, the indictment alleges.

One staffer — who appears to be former city hall aide Rana Abbasova, who was suspended by the administration for asking her staff to delete posts — “excused herself to the bathroom” during an interview with investigators in November 2023, court documents said.

In the bathroom, Abbasova “deleted the encrypted messaging applications she had used to communicate with Adams,” the documents said. A Turkish official, an airline manager and a promoter, among others, had offered the mayor undisclosed benefits.

The indictment also alleges that Adams used deception when federal authorities first raided his associates’ homes in November 2023 and seized his electronic devices.

When Adams turned his personal cellphone over to federal police after being served with a subpoena, investigators discovered it had been locked and required a password to unlock it.

The mayor claimed he changed his password the day before to prevent his staff from accidentally or intentionally deleting the phone’s contents, because, according to Adams, “he wanted to preserve the contents of his phone for the investigation,” the complaint said.

“But Adams further claimed that he had forgotten the password he had just set and was therefore unable to provide the FBI with a password that would allow him to unlock the phone,” the court documents state.
