And that’s half of it! Tottenham led thanks to Johnson’s first goal, which came after Dragusin’s red card. Spurs did reasonably well when down to ten men, but Qarabag was back in action towards the end of the half, which comes at a good time for the hosts. During the break they have to regroup.

45+1 minutes: What a challenge! On the stroke of half-time it was almost a disaster for Spurs. Davies lost the ball to Juninho, but Vicario rushed out and made the tackle. That could have been a goal, or another red card, but the Italian’s timing was perfect.

43 min: More chances for Qarabag, with Tottenham now holding on until half-time. Van de Ven makes an important header and throws himself on the ball, after which the shot is eventually dragged wide and Tottenham can play freely.

40 minutes: OPPORTUNITY! Qarabag must be level. It comes after their first real period of sustained pressure. Juninho was offside, but held his point and waited for Qarabag to put the ball wide. When the low cross came in, he was onside again, but opened his foot too wide and guided it past the post. Vicario was said to have been beaten.

36 min: Good keeper from Vicario, who dives to cut out the cross towards Juninho. He is one of many Tottenham players making their European debut tonight.

32 minutes: Despite that miss, there is a lot to like about Johnson’s performance tonight. He looks confident and has now scored three goals in a row after being criticized after the North London derby. It was a great reaction from the 23-year-old.

27 minutes: OPPORTUNITY! Where does the goalkeeper go? Gray lifts a ball over the top and Qarabag keeper Kochalski charges off his line even though he is miles away from the ball. Johnson is ahead of him, shoots past him, but is unable to put the volley back on target from just outside the penalty area.

He holds his head and knows he could have done better there.

24 minutes: Remember last season when Tottenham were down to nine men against Chelsea but still refused to defend deep? I get a similar feeling from the Postecoglou team tonight. Despite the red card, they still show a lot of ambition on the ball.

Davies has gone and replaced Dragusin, with Udogie at left-back. Archie Gray has made an impressive start at right-back and continues to fill the midfield when Tottenham have gained possession. So far, Spurs have 74% of the ball.

20 minutes: There is danger for Spurs. Qarabag again raced clear, but Udogie recovered brilliantly to challenge with Toral Bayramov in the box. Van de Ven must then make a very similar recovery run.

Tottenham are still putting up numbers despite the red card, leaving holes open for Qarabag.

15 minutes: What a start to this game. Tottenham is still at ten, but is leading. However, there is still a long way to go.

Between Dragusin’s red card and Johnson’s good finish, Lucas Bergvall was sent off for Udogie. Shame, I think a lot of Spurs fans were hoping to see the 18-year-old in action tonight.

But the change worked for Spurs when Johnson scored moments later.
