Grotesquerie stars Emmy winners Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B Vance and NFL star Travis Kelce in acting debuts

“I want them to leave with ‘I have to see the next one’.”

This is what actor Courtney B Vance says about Ryan Murphy’s new drama series Grotesquerie.

“There’s so much there,” Vance told ABC News.

“There’s so much food out there that if we do our job right (the public will say), ‘No, no, no, no, no, it can’t be over.’

“That’s what I would like them to walk away with. It’s an event. It will be an event.’

With two episodes in the 10-episode series co-created and written by Murphy (Monster, American Horror Story, 9-1-1), Vance may have just gotten his wish.

Grotesquerie follows detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) as she investigates a series of horrific crimes that have unsettled a small community.

Vance (The People v OJ Simpson, Lovecraft Country) plays Marshall Tryon, Lois’ husband, who spends a long time in the hospital battling his own demons, but the absence of his charm and wisdom while in a coma takes a toll on him. toll. on Lois.

“We are a very modern, dysfunctional family,” Vance said.

Lois has a tense relationship with her daughter Merritt, played by Raven Goodwin (Single Black Female, Lola, Being Mary Jane).

“Merritt is complicated,” Goodwin told ABC News.

“She’s very intelligent, so I wanted that to come across.

“But she’s also a 27-year-old kid, if that makes sense.

“So trying to put those things on display – she was very childlike, she was also very intelligent – and it was interesting to weave the two together.

“I love Merritt. I think I definitely found the nuance in her.”

While Vance wants the show to spark conversations and get people hanging around for the next episode, audience members will need to have strong stomachs.

His co-star says the show is for those who “love horror.”

“I think it will put a few people in the scared department,” Goodwin said.

Vance continues, “If we approach it from a character perspective, the horror is… ingrained.”

Lois finds that the crimes taking place are eerily personal and, unsure of where to turn, she accepts help from Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), a nun and journalist who writes for the Catholic Guardian.

The two would become entangled in a sinister web that raises more questions than answers.

The cast members have a string of Emmys and other awards between them.

The show also stars British actor Lesley Manville (The Crown) as Nurse Redd and Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) as Father Charlie Mayhew.

And Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is in a high-profile relationship with pop star Taylor Swift, has been cast in his acting debut.

He does not appear in the first two episodes and it is unclear what the extent of his role is.

“Travis is great,” Goodwin said.

“Travis is dope.

“He was such a sponge. He wanted to absorb everything and he really showed up to work.”

Vance agrees.

“I mean, I couldn’t do that for the football field,” he said.

“If they told me to go… no, we were done.”

Big question is streaming on Disney+.
