I chose DINNER because I was trying to do something with food, inspired by today’s Strands puzzle. It ended up being a great first guess, but I messed things up on my second. According to Wordle Bot I should have chosen REACH. That would have eliminated many more options. Unfortunately, I was hoping CIDER would be the answer because it’s such a perfect fall word. I then suspected WIDER, but still to no avail. Luckily, with four words left, RIDER ended up being the Wordle. Huzzah!

I get 0 points for guessing in four, but I get 1 point for beating the Bot, who made no less than five attempts today. Huzza again!

How to Play Competitive Wordle

• Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
• If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. In case of a draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
• Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points: positive or negative.
• You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Contemporary Wordle Etymology

The word “horseman” comes from Old English to ridemeaning ‘one who drives’, derived from the verb ritanwhich means ‘to drive’. This word has its origins in the Proto-Germanic verb rīdanąwhich also means ‘to ride’ or ‘to travel on horseback’. The same root occurs in other Germanic languages, such as Old Norse rīða and Old High German ritaan.
