Tomlin ‘not overly concerned’ about Steelers’ first-half performance against Colts

Despite an ugly first half that included several self-inflicted injuries that left the Pittsburgh Steelers trailing the Indianapolis Colts 17-3 at halftime, Mike Tomlin isn’t hitting the panic button. In a halftime interview with CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala, Tomlin says the Steelers need to settle down and stop beating themselves.

“To be honest, we’re not too worried,” Tomlin told Kinkhabwala. “We turn the ball over in the red zone. We got the ball to start the second half. There is a lot of ball in front of us. Obviously it requires an adjustment between (Anthony) Richardson and (Joe) Flacco. But apart from that, we just have to perform a little bit harder than we already have.”

Pittsburgh had missed opportunity after missed opportunity in the first 30 minutes. CB Joey Porter Jr. could have completed two passes, the team failed to recover a fumble, couldn’t convert on the 4th and a half yards, and WR George Pickens fumbled while the Steelers were in range for their first points of the game.

Defensively, the Steelers have settled down a bit, helped by the Colts losing QB Anthony Richardson to a hip injury. That allowed Pittsburgh to focus on RB Jonathan Taylor, whose early success was muted. He enters the half averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

Injuries also played a role: the team lost OG James Daniels early in the first half due to an ankle injury. EDGE Nick Herbig missed some time with an ankle injury, though he has returned to the game, and RB Cordarrelle Patterson hurt an ankle himself and left on a cart. He was the Steelers’ best source of offensive success in the first 30 minutes.

A late drive in the first half produced Pittsburgh’s first points of the half, with K Chris Boswell hitting a 50-yard field goal as time expired. The Steelers now trail by fourteen and will be looking to get off to a hot start to get back into the game after halftime.
