Four insights from the Bills’ embarrassing Week 4 loss to the Ravens

We’ve seen this story before.

The Buffalo Bills are starting the season strong, fans are getting excited and the national media is starting to talk about the team again as a Super Bowl contender. They then fall prey to an ugly loss, prompting both the local and national football community to question their viability as contenders. That’s the case again after Buffalo’s embarrassing 35-10 Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bills will eventually bounce back, especially once their injury-ravaged defense recovers. That said, the loss is still painful at this point. With that, here are four takeaways from Buffalo’s Week 4 loss.

For all the kudos that depth linebackers Baylon Spector and Dorian Williams have received when they started the season in place of Terrel Bernard and Matt Milano, they looked like backups against the Ravens. Baltimore took advantage of the injuries and attacked the Bills’ linebackers, who were out of position and overmatched. The Ravens racked up nearly 300 yards of offense in the first half alone, while averaging 10 yards per play over the first two frames.

The two each showed signs of life as the game progressed, each coming up with a pair of impact plays in the second half, but they were the focal point of Baltimore’s offensive attack to start the game. The Ravens’ strategy worked, building a heavy lead by both running and passing into the middle of the defense; Hopefully this was just a blip for the two depth linebackers who didn’t necessarily seem out of place prior to this game.

Buffalo’s offense was firing on all cylinders through the first part of the season, but there were frequent miscues on Sunday, starting on the first drive when Dalton Kincaid had an uncharacteristic drop on a third down play that would have kept the series alive. Later in the half, a goal to Khalil Shakir fell incomplete for the first time in thirty attempts. The miscues continued with a beautiful deep throw to Keon Coleman that went through his hands and fell to the ground. The overall blunders resulted in the Bills putting up just 10 points on the board in Baltimore after averaging north of 37 points per game through the first three weeks of the season.

The momentum shifted in the Bills’ favor to start the second half despite trailing 21–3 at halftime; Buffalo forced a Baltimore three-and-out to open the second half, got the ball and took it down the field for six. The bills followed that up by forcing another three and out; However, after a few plays to move the ball down the field, offensive coordinator Joe Brady called what appeared to be a reverse flea flicker with Curtis Samuel making a direct charge before running to the sideline and throwing the ball to his quarterback, who lined up at the recipient. The play resulted in Josh Allen being hit while he was throwing and fumbling. Allen took a hard hit after the throw attempt and slowly came up. This was by far the worst call of the night and the worst game since Joe Brady took over as offensive coordinator last season. This play negated any momentum Buffalo was building as the Ravens promptly scored a touchdown after the turnover.

Buffalo was bullied and embarrassed against the Ravens on Sunday night. This game is a reminder that the NFL is a week-to-week competition and you have to be ready to play every game. Buffalo looked like a Super Bowl frontrunner a week ago and like a team in the cellar tonight. It’s okay; the bills will be good. All-Pro nickel defender Taron Johnson and starting middle linebacker Terrel Bernard will be back soon, possibly this week; this should alleviate a lot of the defensive concerns going forward. It’s on to the Houston Texans in Week 5 and a chance to get back on track. This loss was ugly, but there is absolutely no need to hit the panic button.
