The Miami Dolphins’ struggles continued Monday as they lost 31-12 to the previously winless Tennessee Titans.

With Tua Tagovailoa still on injured reserve, the Dolphins offense was sluggish. Quarterback Tyler Huntley had just 96 yards and Miami mustered just 106 yards on the ground as the Dolphins played conservatively compared to the high-powered offense fans had become accustomed to last season.

Titans’ starting quarterback Will Levis suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter of the game, prompting Tennessee to insert backup Mason Rudolph under center. Even with the starting quarterback sidelined for most of the game, Tennessee had no problems against Miami.

After the loss, fans expressed their frustration with head coach Mike McDaniel, claiming he was unable to run the offense with Tagovailoa off the field.

Mike McDaniel is doing about as bad a coaching job as it’s possible to do in the NFL right now. People say he was the one who saved Tua. In recent weeks it seems more and more like it was the other way around.

Unfortunately for McDaniel, he will be without his star quarterback for at least two more games. By placing Tagovailoa on injured reserve after his scary concussion in Week 2, the Dolphins promised to be without him until at least the end of October, though it was always possible he would miss more time than that.

In the meantime, McDaniel will have to figure out how to get things done without Tagovailoa on the court.

While Tagovailoa is missing, Miami still has one of the best receivers in the league in Tyreek Hill and another strong option in Jaylen Waddle. Those two are capable of making plays on the pitch regardless of who is under center, and McDaniel could consider involving them more in the future.

After Monday’s loss, the Dolphins get a chance to bounce back against an AFC East foe in the New England Patriots. Now that we’re 1-3 this year, it’s fair to say the matchup will be crucial.
