The Las Vegas community continues to heal, mirroring the tragedy of One October

Tuesday marks the seventh anniversary of the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on the Las Vegas Strip that left 58 people dead.

Years later, more victims were added to that number after they too lost their lives due to complications from injuries they suffered that night on October 1, 2017.

“My heart goes out to them. God bless them. It was a horrible, horrible ordeal,” said Las Vegas resident Joseph Sandoval, who showed up to pay his respects to the victims at the “Remembering October 1” exhibit at the Clark County Government Center.

Seven years later, the tragedy of One October remains deeply ingrained in the minds of more than just friends, family and loved ones of the lives lost that tragic night.

“It was just surreal that something of that magnitude could happen, and it was just unbelievable. You couldn’t just get a handle on it and even now, seven years later, it still has a significant impact on those of us who live here,” said Las Vegas resident Sara Cochrane.

There are many memorial areas set up throughout Las Vegas to honor the victims, such as the “Remembering October 1” exhibit at the County Government Center and the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden. Many locals use the areas to better reflect on the victims and the overall Las Vegas community.

“Since no one was at that concert, I want to say an extra prayer for all those families who are still suffering. “I think of the grief of the families, I think of the lives wasted that happened and I pray that it doesn’t happen again,” Cochrane said. “It’s like if one gets hurt, everyone gets hurt. The emotions you go through for so many people, whether you knew them or not, you feel for them and for the families.”

As the entire community continues to heal and understand what happened on October 1st, some say the everlasting consequences of that tragic night have changed their outlook on life.

“It makes me stay at home and not go to big events anymore. I stayed home. It was a terrible ordeal,” Sandoval said.

A memorial ceremony to honor the lives lost will be held Tuesday at 10:05 p.m. at the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden.
