Real Madrid predicted line-up vs. Lille: Mbappé to play?

Real Madrid face Lille in the first away leg of their Champions League title defense due to some key injury concerns.

Injuries continued to plague Real Madrid ahead of the second Champions League match. Just as Jude Bellingham, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga returned from the sidelines, Kylian Mbappé and Thibaut Courtois suffered injuries. The Frenchman seems to have recovered from a thigh injury and is back in training. That was him depicted flying to this fixture, so it appears to be in conflict. But Courtois is permanently out with an abductor injury to his left leg.

Now Carlo Ancelotti must compensate for the fact that his starting goalkeeper is out against Lille and that his main striker will probably only be able to play a secondary role. However, the midfield could get a boost if the manager gives Camavinga the nod. The 21-year-old was due to make his first appearance of the season in the Madrid derby, but Ancelotti opted to keep Camavinga on the bench in the controversial 1-1 draw. The manager also revealed that Mbappe could feature in the match if he is fully fit on Wednesday.

This is what Real Madrid’s team could look like against Lille on October 2.

GK: Andriy Lunin–Lunin will get his first start of the season for Los Blancos as Courtois recovers from injury.

RB: Dani Carvajal–The right-back has started slowly this season and will look to be more involved in attack on Wednesday.

CB: Éder Militão–The defender scored against Atlético Madrid this weekend and will be a target in set pieces against a Lille side who have conceded 11 goals in six games.

CB: Antonio Rüdiger–The Germany international needs to be at his best to help his new goalkeeper keep Jonathan David and Lille off the scoresheet.

LB: Ferland Mendy–Mendy will have the tough task of locking down Edon Zhegrova. The winger has scored three goals in his last five games.

RM: Federico Valverde–Real Madrid’s unsung hero, Valverde is Ancelotti’s most versatile midfielder. His precise passing and defensive work-rate are two of the many reasons why the Uruguayan has started every game this season. However, if the manager wants to give anyone a rest, it is Valverde.

CM: Aurélien Tchouaméni–Tchouaméni is the last line of defense for Los Blancos’ back line. His tackles and interceptions are crucial to suppressing teams in transition.

CM: Eduardo Camavinga–The Frenchman could make his first appearance of the 2024-2025 season. Camavinga was an unused substitute against Atlético Madrid after recovering from a knee injury.

LM: Jude Bellingham– The midfielder must do better to connect with Vinícius Jr. and to make Rodrygo if Mbappé does not start.

ST: Vinicius Junior– The Brazilian can take advantage of Lille’s weak backline to propel himself into the Champions League. In all competitions, Vinicius Jr. only three goals scored in ten games.

ST: Rodrygo–The 23-year-old will look to bounce back after a quiet, low-impact match in the Madrid derby. Rodrygo, like Vinicius Jr., has only three goals this season.
