Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, which means that in addition to our regularly scheduled Wordle, I’ve added a riddle for all you fine puzzle solvers to solve. Today I’ll give you the answer (which a few of you already guessed: well done!)

This was the riddle:

A knight, a pope, is buried in London.

The fruit of his labor was a holy wrath incurred.

You look for the orb that should be on his grave.

It speaks of pink flesh and seeded womb.

The answer: an apple! This is from The Da Vinci Code and refers to Sir Isaac Newton, famous for his big ideas and the apple that inspired his theory of gravity.

I’m actually not even sure where GRAIN came from as an opening gambit. Sometimes words just pop into my head and seem like good choices. Today, however, he was extremely lucky. With three boxes and only four words left, I opted for a thematic second guess: VEGAN. Unfortunately, no gap in two for yours truly. Yet only one possible word remained. RUN for the win. Rock me mama like a wagon wheel. . .

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. In case of a draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
  • Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points: positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!
