Ange Postecoglou solves the mystery of Sergio Reguilon’s appearance

Mystery solved! It’s a slow news day in Tottenham Hotspur land as the team spent most of the day flying to and settling in Hungary ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League match against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

But the big mystery of the day was what on earth was Sergio Reguilon doing on the plane? It ruffled feathers (if I can mix a metaphor? That’s okay!) from stupid people online who misinterpreted UEFA regulations and suggested he had replaced Destiny Udogie in Spurs’ Europa League squad (side note: that he can’t) and started working preventively, angry at Ange Postecoglou on behalf of Djed Spence.

Well, it turns out Reggie was there for a good reason, according to Big Ange: he’s a traffic cone. Postecoglou explained at his press conference that Reggie, along with some unnamed academy kids, had gone to Hungary to fill out the training roster and make sure they had enough bodies. And that was it.

‘He’s a Spurs player, mate. I mean we have a training session so it’s a balance that we need twenty players for training, that’s what we do for matchday minus one. There was no point in bringing someone like Radu (Dragusin, suspended) or a few guys with injuries because we won’t be back until late on Thursday.

“We’ve brought in some young guys. The academy played last night and we didn’t want to disrupt that, but we brought a few young lads and Reguilon with us to make sure our training today is really good. In terms of team, Destiny hasn’t traveled since the weekend. It’s nothing major, his injury, but again, there was no point in signing him if he wasn’t going to play. Radu is suspended and Sonny is back in London to recuperate, but the rest of the squad and the young players have travelled.”

So it is not a conspiracy, and everyone can put their purple and yellow glasses back in the box. Reggie is just a good teammate, and if he can’t (or doesn’t want to) play, he can at least help coach the guys who want to.

Elsewhere, Ange said there are no new concerns within the squad and Dominic Solanke is fit and available to play against Ferencvaros, although that doesn’t mean he will. I’m pretty sure I saw BIG WILLY LANKS in the video of Spurs boarding the plane, which was previously posted on social media, and although both Cuti Romero and Micky van de Ven made the trip to Hungary, Ange said that it is very likely that 18-year-old Archie Gray will feature somewhere in the backline… even as a centre-back.

“No, I think Archie can play as a centre-back. He obviously played as a wing-back, played in midfield and probably played as a left-back. He’s quite a versatile player and that’s one of the reasons why we were really excited to bring him to the club. He absorbs information well and now that Radu is suspended and Destiny is out, we definitely need him at the back. We have a number of different options where we can use it, but I would like to use it in all those areas.”

Ferencvaros dropped their first match in the Europa League group stage, losing 2–1 at Anderlecht on 25 September. They currently lead the Hungarian League, which is not surprising considering they have won the league for the past five seasons. The match kicks off at 12:45pm ET / 5:45pm BST and will be broadcast on TNT 1 in the UK. It’s streaming on Paramount+ in the US, as usual.
