How much will Vanderbilt pay Alabama in fines after the field rush?

It won’t worsen the pain of a loss to Vanderbilt, but Alabama football will receive a pile of money from the Commodores after VU fans stormed the field at FirstBank Stadium after their team defeated the Crimson Tide on Saturday. The fine is $100,000, which will be paid to UA under the SEC’s 2023 field penalty structure.

The fine was Vanderbilt’s first under the new fine structure. The second violation will cost $250,000, while any subsequent violations will cost $500,000 each.

The Commodores are repeat violators of field entry rules, with six fines since 2004, when the SEC instituted the penalties. The number of violations will reset in 2015 and 2023, increasing the dollar amounts each time.

Saturday’s court rush means that Vanderbilt has been paid a total of $730,000 over the years, more than any other team in the SEC.

Alabama has been the target of field rushes regularly due to the success of Nick Saban’s tenure. The last time a Crimson Tide road loss wasn’t followed by a crowd of fans on the field was the 2010 season at LSU.

Saturday’s show made Alabama football the team that SEC fan bases have been rooting for more than any other. Other schools have paid fines after beating the Tide football team eight times, one more than Kentucky Basketball.

UA athletics director Greg Byrne has called for even stricter penalties for field and field rushes, suggesting teams will have to forfeit the game they just won if their fans storm.

“Kids aren’t going to sit in the stands and say, ‘Oh, I don’t want to do this because the school is going to be fined $200,000,’” Byrne said in February. “That doesn’t fit their mentality. But if they knew the game that they had just been a part of and were celebrating a big win leading up to that, if they knew they were going to lose that match immediately, that would hold them back.

Vanderbilt wasn’t the only school to be fined for a rusher after Saturday. Arkansas fans also stormed the field after beating Tennessee, which means a $100.00 fine for the Razorbacks.
