Tigers shut out Guardians again to win ALDS Game 3: Live updates recap

Upper 9th: Tyler Holton comes on and delivers two groundouts, followed by a game-ending strikeout. The Tigers are coming off their second straight shutout and getting some hits at the right time while they are one win away from an ALCS berth. Final score: Tigers 3, Guardians 0

Bottom 8th: Tigers go down in order, including pinch-hitter Andy Ibanez, and we’re three outs away from a Game 3 Tigers win. Tigers 3, Guards 0

Top 8th: A few nice catches by outfielders Wenceel Perez and Parker Meadows help Will Vest, after which Vest records a strikeout to end the inning and goes to the dugout pumped up. Tigers 3, Guards 0

Bottom 7th: Andrew Walters takes over the 7th for Cleveland and eliminates the Tigers in order. Jace Jung pinch-hit for Justyn-Henry Malloy. Tigers 3, Guards 0

Top 7th: Beau Brieske records an inning-opening strikeout and then leaves. Sean Guenther records one groundout, but then an HBP and a single, but Will Vest comes in and provides a lineout to end the threat. Tigers 3, Guards 0

Bottom 6th: After an 0-for-14 start with nine strikeouts in his first postseason, Spencer Torkelson hit an RBI double to score Colt Keith and give the Tigers some security. Tigers 3, Guards 0

Top 6th: Beau Brieske goes 1-2-3 and finishes with a strikeout, as this Tigers pitching staff completes its 18th consecutive scoreless inning. Tigers 2, Guards 0

Bottom 5th: The Tigers walked two, including one to pinch-hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy (who batted for Kerry Carpenter). But they leave two behind as left fielder Steven Kwan nets a ball from Riley Greene to end the inning. Tigers 2, Guards 0

Top 5th: Brant Hurter gives up back-to-back one-out singles and is lifted for Beau Brieske, who records a strikeout and flyout to Jose Ramirez to end the threat. Tigers 2, Guards 0

Bottom 4th: Cleveland is making the move for reliever Erik Sabrowski. The Tigers get a gift to start the inning when a routine hopper goes over Josh Naylor’s glove for a two-base error. But strikeouts by Colt Keith and Spencer Torkelson and a flyout by Trey Sweeney keep them scoreless. Tigers 2, Guards 0

Top 4th: A third straight scoreless inning for Brant Hurter, who gave up two hits to his first two batters, but has allowed only one hit since. Tigers 2, Guards 0

Bottom 3rd: Jake Rogers hits a stand-up double to lead off the inning. Parker Meadows moves him to third base with a groundout and Matt Vierling sends him home with a sacrifice fly for the Tigers’ second run. Tigers 2, Guards 0

Top 3rd: Managers are taking steps in this regard. Stephen Vogt uses his second pinch hitter of the game and AJ Hinch walks Jose Ramirez with two outs. But Cleveland’s pinch hitters are now 0-for-2 and the Tigers retire the batter after Ramirez to keep the Guardians scoreless. Tigers 1, Guards 0

Bottom 2nd: Spencer Torkelson and Trey Sweeney strike out as the Tigers go hitless in the second. Tigers 1, Guards 0

Top 2nd: A bit of an early management game. AJ Hinch lifts Keider Montero after a six-pitch first inning for righty Brant Hurter. Stephen Vogt counters with a pinch hitter in the second inning, right Johnkensy Noel. The Guardians start the inning with two hits, but Hurter recovers to eliminate the team scoreless. Tigers 1, Guards 0

Bottom 1st: Parker Meadows hits a leadoff single and Riley Greene drives it home three batters later as the Tigers strike first. Kerry Carpenter and Matt Vierling also both made solid contact on Guardians starter Alex Cobb. Tigers 1, Guards 0

Top 1st: A six-pitch first inning for Keider Montero with only one ball yielded two flyouts and a groundout. This audience enjoys it. Tigers 0, Guards 0

Foreplay: A perfect October day for baseball here in Detroit: 63 degrees and sunny about 20 minutes before the first pitch.

The big question is how long Keider Montero will last as a starter. Guardians have six lefties and two switch hitters in their lineup. Lefty Brant Hurter warmed up before the game.
