Henderson students are preparing for changes as budget cuts put pressure on teachers

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Some parents in the Inspirada area are starting to feel the effects of the $20 million shortfall in the Clark County School District budget.

Now there is new concern from some parents at Ellis Elementary School about how this will affect their children who are in specialized programs with their current teachers.

Heather Seltzer’s two daughters attend Ellis Elementary, but she recently received a letter from the principal stating that six teachers will be moved, and some will go to other schools. There will also be an additional 3 students at each school.

In her daughter Nora’s second grade, this means she will have 25 classmates.

“It’s already full and the teachers are spread out, it’s not fair,” Seltzer said.

One of the teachers who will be moving is her daughter Nora’s current second-grade teacher.

“I just met her and I already loved her, like not many people start loving their teacher in the eighth week of school,” Nora said.

There are also concerns that with the new class size and a new teacher, Nora will not get the attention she needs.

“Nora has had some behavioral issues since she started school, she has been acting out a little bit,” Seltzer said.

Her behavior allowed her current teacher, Nora, and Nora’s mother to devise a specialized plan known as a 504 plan so that Nora could work on her behavior while still in the classroom with the other children.

“The plans were followed, her teacher was so communicative about everything. We did a few video conferences the first few months of school to make sure she was on track and her behavior this year was a 180 from last year,” Seltzer explained.

But that was last year and this year now presents a whole new set of challenges.

“How do you tell your kids that your teacher is no longer there because of money because someone higher up messed up,” Seltzer said. “I don’t think Nora has any idea what’s going on.”

CCSD administrators are expected to discuss the budget deficit at their school board meeting Thursday.
