At least 13 people have died after Hurricane Milton devastated parts of Florida, waking residents to survey the damage.

Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane Wednesday evening near Siesta Key in Sarasota County, bringing multiple tornadoes, 28-foot waves, high winds, heavy rain and devastating storm surge.

Four people in the St. Lucie County retirement village were killed by tornadoes caused by the hurricane, after a dozen tornadoes spawned in the region within 20 minutes.

The heavy wind caused a crane to collapse into the water The Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg, while the roof of the Tropicana Field baseball stadium has fallen into disrepair.

More than 3.3 million Florida homes and businesses have been left powerless, with those in the west-central region hardest hit.

Millions of people were warned to evacuate, with Bradenton Police Chief Melanie giving a bleak prognosis for those who ignored advice. “What we will probably find tomorrow morning are bodies,” she told BBC Radio 4 Today program on Thursday morning.

After landfall, Milton has weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and is moving away from Florida’s east coast – where residents are still battling brutal winds and storm surge.
