Tesla Unveils 2-Seater Self-Driving Cybercab, Price Expected to Be Under $30,000: Also Shows 20-Seater Robovan as Uber Shuttle Competitor – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)

EV giant Tesla Inc. TSLA on Thursday unveiled its special two-seater robotaxi product, nicknamed the Cybercab, complete with butterfly wings that open upwards.

What happened: CEO of the company Elon Musk said at an ongoing event in Los Angeles that Tesla made 20 units of the vehicle, which drove itself to the event stage with the billionaire inside. At first glance, the Cybercab’s exterior design resembles the Cybertruck’s angular, steel body.

The design also shows great similarities with the design that Musk’s biographer Walter Isaacson shared in his book published last year. According to Musk, the car is expected to cost less than $30,000.

Musk also revealed that the Cybercab will not include a charging plug, but will instead use inductive charging.

The Robovan: Tesla also unveiled the robovan that can accommodate up to 20 people.

The robovan has an angular structure and has no pedals or steering wheels, but looks like a wagon on the outside.

It could compete Uber Technologies Inc UBER newly announced shuttle service, but details about the robovan’s launch are still unknown.

Vision for autonomous driving: The company will begin autonomous driving next year with its Model 3 and Model Y in Texas and California and the Cybercab will join the autonomous fleet in 2026 or before 2027, Musk said, adding that he tends to exaggerate to be optimistic with timelines.

The product was unveiled at the event called “We, Robot”, held by Tesla at the Warner Bros. film studio. Discovery Inc. near Los Angeles. Even though the event was scheduled to start at 10:00 PM CT, there was a significant delay of over 50 minutes.

Musk said the event was postponed because one of the guests had a medical emergency.

Optimus, Musk reiterated, will be available at a price of $20,000-$30,000 once production ramps up.

Musk previously said the EV company would have “really useful” low-production humanoid robots for use in its factories next year. The company will “hopefully” increase production for other customers in 2026, he said in July.

Price promotion: Tesla shares rose 0.4% after hours after closing down nearly 1% at $238.77 on Thursday, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
