JASON X, The FRIDAY THE 13TH In Space, gets a 4K release

It seems like Arrow Video is really trying to stay in the world Friday the 13th company. Just a quick recap: the boutique label recently released a 2009 luxury version Friday the 13th remake on 4K, which sold out quite quickly. More recently, it came to light that Arrow is also gives 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday the 4K treatment. Well, more good news for Jason Voorhees fans, as it seems like 2002 Jason also gets a 4K upgrade. That’s right! Jason Voorhees in Space in Ultra HD!

According to the folks at Dawn of the Discs (see below), the new 4K release of Michael Dougherty’s Trick’r Treat includes a postcard quietly announcing the upcoming Arrow release Jason. Photographic evidence was also provided in the wire. For the record, this is exactly the same way the Jason goes to hell news was revealed before director Adam Marcus confirmed it. So it all adds up. Unfortunately, no further information has been provided for the time being.

Jason premiered in theaters in 2002 and was the tenth entry in the series, which at that point had not appeared on the big screen for almost a decade. Director Jason Isaac decided to take things in a whole new direction and take the machete-wielding maniac to space in the distant future. It wasn’t exactly critically acclaimed at the time, but has been embraced by an increasing number of fans in the years since its release. For those who might need a refresher, the summary is as follows:

“In the year 2455, a team of students on a routine training mission are about to learn a terrifying lesson. Over the years, Jason Voorhees has claimed more than 200 victims. Now the legendary killer from Crystal Lake finds himself aboard a spaceship. And something like zero gravity won’t stop horror’s most vicious killer…’

Meanwhile, the Friday the 13th franchise is still in somewhat of a limbo. We haven’t had any movies since the ’09 remake and there are currently no plans for a new one. A23 and Peacock are, however An updated version of the Crystal lake TV series. There are also plans for a new one Friday the 13th video game, although details are limited on that front. So for now, watching Jason smash a girl’s frozen head to smithereens in a spaceship in high definition will suffice.

No word yet on a release date for the Jason 4K disc, but stay tuned. For more, check out our list of previously hated sequels that are now loved by fans.
