Statement by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on the expansion of sanctions against Iran following the attack on Israel

On October 1, Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on Israel. This attack targeted Israel’s most populous city, Tel Aviv, and could have killed hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent people. Fortunately, the attack was defeated and rendered ineffective thanks to the US military’s cooperation with the Israeli military. After that reckless attack, we made it clear that Iran would face serious consequences. Since then, we have consulted with allies and partners, including a call between the President and his G7 counterparts, and today the Treasury and State Departments announced new and important measures to more effectively address Iran’s energy trade. Today’s new designations also include action against the “Ghost Fleet” that transports Iranian illicit oil to buyers around the world. These measures will further help deny Iran funding used to support its missile programs and support terrorist groups that threaten the United States, its allies and partners.

President Biden has consistently confronted and will continue to confront Iran’s destabilizing actions. Under the Biden-Harris administration, the United States has not lifted any sanctions on Iran and designated more than 700 individuals and entities linked to the full range of Iran’s destabilizing activities and support for terrorism in the Middle East and globally . Today’s announcement is coordinated with allies and partners, many of whom will announce their own actions to hold Iran accountable for its attack in the coming days.
