Bill Maher says Chappell Roan would be thrown off the roof in Gaza

As Bill Maher tries to appeal to Generation Z, he’s recycling some particularly outdated talking points.

In Friday’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maherthe comedian used Chappell Roan’s recent political statements to inform the “Pink Pony Club” artist and her fans about the war between Israel and Hamas.

“To celebrate the anniversary of October 7, we must launch a campaign to educate young Americans about the Middle East,” Maher said. “And the way I want to start that process is by writing an open letter to Chappell Roan. To the viewers who aren’t watching this while also looking at your phones, let me explain. … She’s actually a great new artist, who, like a Hezbollah pageant, is really blowing up.

While Maher praised Roan for his criticism of both sides of the political spectrum, he attributed her perceived support for Palestine to TikTok “propaganda.”

“Chappell, if you think it was repressive to grow up queer in the Midwest, try the Middle East,” he mused. “You’re a female drag queen and you sing, ‘I found you in the bathroom when we went to dinner, your parents at the table.’ Yeah, that wouldn’t fly in Gaza. Although You would, right off a roof. The same goes for ‘knee deep in the passenger seat and you’ll eat me.’ Yeah, I guess the vice squad would figure out it’s not about the drive-thru and kill your feathered, boa-wearing ass. You know when you sing, “LA is where boys and girls can all be queens every day”? You’re welcome, but bidding isn’t good in the West Bank.

“Chappell, you are not wrong to say that oppression is bad, or that the Palestinian and many other Muslim peoples are oppressed and deserve to be liberated. You’re just completely backwards about who’s doing the oppression. Hamas is a terrorist mafia that has taken over Gaza… these are the oppressors. And if you make it all about Israel, you take the pressure off them. You enable them,” Maher said.

Maher’s comments that Roan would be thrown “off a roof” in Gaza reflect a common narrative known as “pinwashing,” the practice of supporting Israel’s LGBTQ progress to distract from ongoing violence and the repression against the Palestinians.

“You’re a singer and you’re advocating for a place and a culture you would never want to live in. Gender may not be binary, but right and wrong are,” Maher concluded.

Although Roan has largely kept her political views close to her chest, she said earlier Rolling stone she planned to read “poems by Palestinian women” when she was invited to the White House, but her publicist advised her against it.

Since the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel – in which Hamas took more than 250 hostages and killed around 1,200 people – more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 2 million displaced in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
