The Boston Celtics played their first home game of the year on Saturday night, earning a monstrous 139-89 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Philadelphia played at Iowa the night before, an exhibition game in the home state of Sixers head coach Nick Nurse. As such, Philly played no starters in this one. Boston, meanwhile, had a nearly full roster, and because it was the first game at TD Garden since winning the NBA title last June, the Celtics crowd was loud and engaged from the start. To say it was a crooked case would be an understatement. Even Boston’s bench was in full swing in the second half, securing an emphatic but meaningless victory.

Here’s a look at what we saw after the Celtics’ 139-89 preseason home win over the 76ers.

The first quarter

Boston’s starters didn’t necessarily open the game with their foot on the accelerator, but the lack of talent quickly took its toll. The Celtics were simply better and more rested than the Sixers, gaining a 40-18 lead after the first quarter.

Luke Kornet played a major role in the story. With Kristaps Porzingis sidelined due to injury and Al Horford taking it easy this preseason, Kornet joined the usual starting lineup. He did not disappoint.

Kornet gave Boston a strong deep, and the former Vanderbilt Commodores recorded 15 points and 8 rebounds in limited action.

The second quarter

The Celtics got an early look at rookie Baylor Scheierman and the rest of the bench in the second frame, although head coach Joe Mazzulla continued to play his starters for much of the period.

The Sixers did not get many opportunities to break the home team’s lead. It didn’t help Philadelphia’s case that Boston went 10-for-23 deep in the first half.

The third quarter

Boston’s top stars also played to open the third period. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each attacked with relative ease before settling for good midway through the quarter.

Tatum finished the game with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists in 23 minutes. Brown himself recorded 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

The fourth quarter

The Celtics bench took over the reins for the rest of the game, successfully keeping the Sixers from making things interesting and instead burying Philadelphia.

Credit Xavier Tillman Sr. for his role in this. He played stingy defense as usual. But more importantly, he shot 3-for-3 from deep with 11 points and 7 rebounds. This might be the biggest takeaway of the entire evening.

Boston is back at the Garden tomorrow night for another game. The Celtics host the Toronto Raptors for their penultimate preseason game.
