DNC to skywrite ‘Vote Kamala’ during the Raiders-Steelers game Sunday

Democrats will intensify their football focus on Sunday, when the Democratic National Committee plans to distribute coverage of four NFL games in battleground states, the party told NBC News.

Week 6 of the NFL schedule has an oddity where three matchups feature battleground state teams: the Green Bay Packers hosting the Arizona Cardinals, the Carolina Panthers hosting the Atlanta Falcons and the Las Vegas Raiders hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The DNC will write “Vote Kamala” above Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas before the afternoon game between the Steelers and the Raiders. In Green Bay and Charlotte, the DNC will fly a plane over Lambeau Field and Bank of America Stadium respectively, carrying banners reading “Sack Trump’s Project 2025! Vote Kamala!” The group will also fly a plane over Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia during the Eagles’ game against the Cleveland Browns, with the caption: “Go Birds! Zak Project 2025. Vote for Kamala.”

Much of the message is based on Project 2025, the conservative transition plan and policy blueprint rejected by former President Donald Trump in the face of an onslaught of Democratic attacks on it. Last month’s NBC News poll found it overwhelmingly unpopular with the electorate.

“It’s NFL Sunday and fans on the battlefield are ready to dismiss Donald Trump’s Project 2025 playbook once and for all,” DNC deputy communications director Abhi Rahman said in a statement.

Democrats have embraced football more firmly this cycle, especially as they’ve pushed messages about Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and his history as a high school football coach. Harris’ campaign has also spent heavily on ads during college and pro football games, and late last month he unveiled his “Athletes for Harris” coalition, which included endorsements from 15 NFL Hall of Famers.

Trump doesn’t shy away from football either: He attended the Alabama-Georgia game last month, shared a photo with members of the Las Vegas Raiders and posted a digital ad with former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. The former president has blanketed the airwaves at football games in recent weeks with ads questioning Harris’ past support for taxpayer-funded gender-affirming treatments.

The DNC has previously displayed banners at baseball games. It held a similar flyover on Wednesday prior to the Detroit Tigers’ playoff game against the Cleveland Guardians. In September, the DNC hung a banner over a Philadelphia Phillies game.
